Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.

In this guide I’ll show you just how easy it is to watch Sonyliv outside India in any country including the USA, Australia, UK or anywhere else. Best of all you can complete it in under 5 minutes and be watching Sonyliv globally.

Sonyliv is one of the best new streaming services to hit India. It has everything from shows and movies to sport. If you’re a big sports fan like me you can watch the Champions League football, Cricket, Tennis and a host of other sports.

You can also watch shows like Prithvi Vallabh, Family Time with Kapil Sharma, Porus, Ek Deewaana That and many more.

If you’re outside India though you’ll find the site blocked but in this guide I’ll show you the 6 simple steps to watching Sonyliv outside India from anywhere in the world.

Watch Sonyliv outside India

If you’ve tried to visit Sonyliv outside India then you’ll already know that most of the content is blocked. Rather than be able to stream your favourite shows or sports you’ll see a message like this:

Sonyliv blocked message

The content you are trying to watch is not available in your geography.

The reason you’re blocked is clear, you’re outside India and Sonyliv is only intended to be watched from inside India.

Near fear though, with a completely legal and easy to use app called a VPN (Virtual Private Network) you can unblock Sonyliv and watch all your favourite content in any country on the planet.

A VPN will cost you around US$5 – $10 depending on how long you sign up for which is approximately Rs.325 – Rs.650. It works by disguising your online location so the Sonyliv website thinks you’re in India even though you’re not.

Just follow the 6-steps below to get a VPN and use it to watch Sonyliv outside India. It’ll take less than 5 minutes of your time.

  1. Visit the VPN service NordVPN and sign-up to their service by clicking here. You can save 30% off a 1-year package by using the coupon code : VPNCOMP17
  2. Navigate to the VPN Apps section of their website and download the correct app for your device.
  3. Install the app for your device and run it. Then login with the account details you made when you signed up.
  4. Select India (1.) on the map.
  5. It should now automatically connect for you but if not press the large Connect (2.) power button.
  6. Once the app has connected which will take less than 30 seconds visit the Sonyliv website or launch the Sonyliv app.

Android / Apple:

NordVPN India Android

Windows / Mac:

NordVPN India

You can now watch as much Sonyliv content as you want as there are no limits on how long you can stay connected or how much you can watch.

When you’ve finished simply press Disconnect on the NordVPN app. You can reconnect as many times as you want and whenever you want as there are no restrictions on usage.

You can also use the same app to watch other Indian TV services like Hotstar and Voot at no additional cost.

How does a VPN work and is it legal?

VPN services are 100% legal in nearly every country in the world. Their purpose is to protect your online privacy to stop others from spying on what you’re doing online.

One of the features of them is the ability to change your online location.

Let’s say for example you’re in the United States. You try to watch Sonyliv but you’re blocked. A VPN allows you to make it look like you’re in India so Sonyliv no longer blocks you.

It does this by first sending your data to India and then on to the Sonyliv website. The Sonyliv website sees a request from India so doesn’t block you. The VPN service then sends back the data from India to you in the United States or wherever else you are in the world.

The result is, you can watch Sonyliv outside India anywhere on the planet.

Recap: Watch Sonyliv outside India

Watching Sonyliv outside India is much easier than you imagine.

To do this you’ll need to get yourself a VPN app. You can get our recommended one by clicking the orange button below.

You can use this on any type of device such as a Windows or Mac computer or even an Android or Apple tablet or phone. Simply install the VPN app, connect to India and then enjoy watching Sonyliv outside India in any country in the world.

ExpressVPN works only for pre recorded content on SonyLIV and not for any live channels. This has been the case for atleast he last month or so and the usual response from support is “we are aware of the issue and engineers are working on it” – the same response repeated again and again with no real solution. For example if you try the current England vs India test match you will not be able to watch it. The screen will show its trying to connect (with the SonyLiV tick symbol flickering for some time before an unexpected error message is displayed). No such issues if you use the same app and try to stream the match using SurfShark VPN (which does have periodic buffering issues).

can someone please upload “Sony Liv” apk for firestick to use in UK via vpn?
I am struggling to change my Amazon account from UK to India.

    • Chris says:

You can change your account to an Indian one using a computer or laptop, add an Indian address. Then search and add the sonyliv app. It’ll download to your firestick automatically. You can then change your account back to a UK one.

Alternatively have you tried APKPure using the Android app and downloading it on the Firestick using something like the ‘Downloader’ app?

      • Mo says:

Thanks for your advice. I managed to change my region to India and have downloaded sonyliv app to my firestick. I was having connection issues earlier but these have now been resolved.
However everything in this app needs premium subscription and one can subscribe using indian mobile no and indian debit/credit cards. I have neither of these and I don’t know anyone in India who could do it for me. Just wanted to ask how are people viewing the sonyliv app in uk using vpn?

        • Chris says:

          Hi Mo,

I think in the past SonyLiv had a lot of free content. There is still some free content as far as I’m aware but much of it requires a subscription now. At the time of writing the article the majority was free. Sorry we don’t have a solution for subscribing without a contact in India itself.

      Hi,
I am in Germany having the same problem with Fire Stick but I installed SonyLiv app via Downloader app. After installing it, as soon as I run the App I see error message “Looks like something is not right”.
any idea to get over this problem? Thanks

      • Chris says:

        Hi Aditya,

It’s difficult to know what the problem could be.

Have you tried changing your account to an Indian Amazon account and adding an Indian address then installing the app directly from Amazon? You can switch your account back afterwards.

Ok… one issue with this article. While it works on browsers however it is not the case of app. Sonyliv app on Amazon Firestick will not let you login with India based credentials. In fact, I have a VPN installed on my firestock and all apps are launched on VPN however Sonyliv app doesn’t even show up when I try to add apps to be browsers with VPN. When I open it in browser even on firestixk with VPN it works but then it is pain to operate browser. Expect Sony Liv, all apps show up launching with VPN.

    • Chris says:

      Hi Hrishi,

Do you have the SonyLiv app already installed on your Firestick? If not you first need to change the region of your Amazon account to India, then you can download the app, otherwise it won’t show. You then need to use the VPN to unblock the app.

Let me know how you get on.
