How to watch Screw anywhere

David has been watching TV outside of his home country for over 12 years. In addition to his streaming expertise, he has a wealth of experience in watching sports and documentaries, having spent many years following these genres. He is an avid fan of The Detectorists and Blue Planet, and also has a keen interest in English football.

As funny as the classic sitcom Porridge is, it doesn’t really reflect the reality of life in prison in the 21st century. This means there was a huge gap in the market for a show like Screw to fill.

It did so splendidly, revealing the shocking reality of life in a men’s prison, especially as a female warder, with a dark humour that is a long way removed from its predecessor in this genre.

This compelling show is back for a new series after its first outing was admired by critics and viewers alike.

Quick Guide: How to watch Screw

  1. Sign up for ExpressVPN.
  2. Download the VPN app, sign in, and select ‘United Kingdom‘.
  3. Go to Channel 4.
  4. Start watching Screw.

Unfortunately, if you live outside the UK, you may have to wait some time for a chance to watch.

That’s because Screw is not currently being broadcast outside the UK. But there is a simple way you can unblock and stream Screw from anywhere.

I’ve done it myself, and if you want to try it too, just keep on reading.

Where is Screw being shown?

Screw is being broadcast in the UK on Channel 4. It is also being streamed live and on-demand on the Channel 4 streaming platform.

However, the Channel 4 streaming service is not accessible to people outside the UK, which is a big problem if, like me, you are overseas and keen to watch the new series of Screw.

But don’t worry. It’s not too hard to unblock and watch Screw where you are. All you need is a small app to help you.

How do I watch Screw where I am?

If you want to watch Screw on the Channel 4 streaming service from wherever you are in the world, you will need the help of an app called a ‘VPN‘.

A VPN is best known as an online security and privacy app that works by encrypting your online data and sending it through an external server. This process helps to hide your identity and location from the websites and apps you visit.

Now, VPN servers can be located all over the world, which means you can hook up to a UK one with ease. And when you do this, you can make the Channel 4 streaming site or app think that you are in the UK even when you aren’t.

That means you can watch Screw where you are right now. Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? But I’ve done it, and it works.

Where to get a VPN?

You need to make sure you choose the right VPN if you are going to watch Screw anywhere.

I have tested all the top VPNs with the Channel 4 streaming service and can personally recommend ExpressVPN as the best VPN app for the job.

ExpressVPN comes with lots of UK-based servers, all of which are able to unblock the Channel 4 streaming service, according to our tests.

It also offers fast and dependable connection speeds so no buffering or lag, lots of apps that work with all the most popular streaming devices, and even a 30-day money-back guarantee, which gives you plenty of time to try before you buy.

If you prefer to shop around, NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN are two other VPN providers worth considering.

They both come with everything you need to watch Screw from abroad on the Channel 4 streaming service, and both also come with a long money-back guarantee.

But it is ExpressVPN that fared best in my tests and which I have no hesitation in recommending.

However, the final decision is yours, so feel free to pick the one you like best!

What is Screw all about?

The premise of Screw

Screw is set at the fictional Long Marsh prison and follows the prison officers in charge of C Wing.

With the two leading characters being female, much of the plot focuses on the challenges of being a female warder in a male prison.

But there is also plenty of analysis of the challenges of trying to make a difference to the prisoners while at the same time coping with all the challenges, they throw at them.

But there is a darker element to life behind bars, with drugs, contraband, and corrupt prison officers all cropping up throughout the first series and more of the same promised in series two.

The main characters and their roles in the show

The senior prison officer in Screws is Leigh Henry, who attempts to run the wing like a captain runs a ship. She is a control freak and terrible at delegating responsibility, which ultimately causes major problems.

The new warder is Rose Gill, a 21-year-old who is streetwise but not nearly as prepared for life inside prison as she once was. She is at the centre of events in the first series and promises to be in series two as well.

Other characters we meet include fellow warders Ali, Gary, Don and Jackie, plus various prisoners.

Critical reception of Screw

Screw was warmly welcomed by critics and viewers alike.

Writing in the Guardian, Rebecca Nicholson said the show was “impeccably observed” and added, “it settles somewhere between soap and Sunday night blockbuster, and I mean that as a compliment. This is broad and warm and welcoming, with enough of a sharp side to make it worth sticking with.”

Who stars in Screw?

Nina Sosanya – Leigh Henry

Nina Sosanya is best known for her roles in the BBC sitcom W1A and drama Last Tango in Halifax.

She has also had prominent roles in Killing Eve, Marcella, His Dark Materials, and season one and two of Good Omens.

Jamie-Lee O’Donnell – Rose Gill

Jamie Lee O'Donnell

Jamie-Lee O’Donnell is definitely best known for her role as Michelle in the hit Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls.

She has also starred in the Northern Irish TV drama 6Degrees.

Ron Donachie – Don Carpenter

Ron Donachie has been around for many years and has had roles in Game of Thrones, Titanic, Karen Pirie, Vera, The Loch, and River City among many others.

Stephen Wight – Gary Campbell

Stephen Wight has had roles in Rain Dogs, Andor, Silent Witness, Manhunt, I May Destroy You, Men in Black International, Finding Joy, Peterloo, and many other series and films.

Ben Tavassoli – Louis Costa

As well as Screws, Ben Tavassoli has also had roles in Death in Paradise, Bulletproof, London Arabia, Tomorrow, and New Blood, amongst other things.

Summary

Screws is definitely Porridge for the 21st century. This is dark humour rather than farce, and critics and fans alike agree that it delivers drama and comedy in spades.

Sadly, if you aren’t in the UK, you won’t be able to watch Screws without a little help. But I know from personal experience that if you use a VPN, you can watch from anywhere.

Just ExpressVPN website, connect to a UK location, and then log into the Channel 4 streaming service as usual.

It works, and it is well worth the effort to watch the newest series of this excellent comedy drama.
