SAS Rogue Heroes is a hugely successful TV drama series based on the books by bestselling author Ben Macintyre.
It tells the story of the creation of the SAS Special Forces unit and as well as being an impressive second world war drama, has also been heralded by some critics as a fitting replacement in the TV schedules for Peaky Blinders.
Unfortunately for fans of Macintyre, Peaky Blinders, and Second World War epics, SAS Rogue Heroes is only available in the UK at the moment.
But don’t fret. It is still possible to watch the whole series of SAS Rogue Heroes live and on-demand no matter where in the world you are based.
And in this guide, we are going to tell you everything you need to know. So if you’re off on your holidays, an ex-pat or away for work, you don’t need to miss out on TV from home.
Where is SAS Rogue Heroes being shown?
SAS Rogue Heroes is being broadcast in the UK on the BBC.
It is also being streamed live and on-demand on the BBC iPlayer streaming service.
Unfortunately, the BBC iPlayer is one of the most fastidious streaming services when it comes to blocking overseas viewers, which means that if you are overseas on holiday or for business, or indeed an ex-pat keen to keep up with the best of British TV, you are likely to be frustrated.
But with a little help, it is still possible to watch SAS Rogue Heroes on the BBC iPlayer from anywhere.
How do I watch SAS Rogue Heroes where I am?
To watch SAS Rogue Heroes from outside the UK, you will need to use a virtual private network or VPN app for short.
A VPN is usually used as an online security and privacy tool. But a quirk of how it works, redirecting your data through external servers means they are capable of unblocking geo-restricted content. This includes streaming services like the BBC iPlayer.
All you have to do is connect your VPN to a UK server, and it is possible to make BBC iPlayer think you’re still in the UK
In this way, you can access the BBC iPlayer from any country globally and watch SAS Rogue Heroes live or on-demand from all around the world.
Where to get a VPN?
This is the tricky part because the BBC iPlayer does try to block VPNs from using this trick to access their service overseas.
The good news is that there are still some VPNs that work with the BBC iPlayer and the best of these is ExpressVPN.
ExpressVPN has a large network of UK servers for you to connect to, has super-fast connection speeds, and offers apps that you can use on all the devices you might want to use to watch SAS Rogue Heroes.
It also comes with an impressive 30-day money-back guarantee, which gives you plenty of time to try before you commit any money.
If you don’t fancy ExpressVPN, two alternative VPNs to consider are NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN. Both work well with the BBC iPlayer too, and both also come with a 30-day money-back guarantee as well.
Although I used ExpressVPN and found them the best, you’re free to pick!

What is SAS Rogue Heroes all about?
SAS Rogue Heroes is the story of how the SAS Special Forces Unit was founded during World War II. It is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Ben Macintyre.
The show has been made by Steven Knight, the man behind Peaky Blinders, and as several critics, including the Radio Times, have noted, it shares “a tone, a sensibility and a style” with his most famous work.
The action takes place in 1941 and tells how the SAS Parachute Regiment was created in part thanks to a disinformation campaign and in part at the whim of Lieutenant David Stirling.
In many ways, this is a classic tale of a group of men on the fringes of society becoming heroes through acts of extreme bravado.
It is set in the north African desert for the most part, with some stunning scenery, and while the bold characterisation, use of rock music, and bright credits may jar with a few more traditional viewers, it has been received very well by the majority of fans and critics alike.
As the Radio Times concludes, “the dialogue is razor-sharp, the performances entertaining and the action well-staged. It’s exactly what Sunday nights have been missing and is sure to leave fans crying out for more.” Exactly how we felt too!
Who stars in SAS Rogue Heroes?
SAS Rogue Heroes stars Conor Swindells (Sex Education, The Vanishing) as David Stirling. He’s a young actor who holds up well amidst an impressive all-star cast.
Dominic West (The Wire, The Crown) plays Lieutenant Colonel Wrangel Clark while Jack O’Connell (Skins, The North Water) plays Paddy Maine and Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones, The Other Boleyn Girl), is Jock Lewes.
Sofia Boutella (The Mummy, Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities) has the main, and almost only female role as Eve while there are also impressive performances from Theo Barklem-Biggs (White Gold, The Inbetweeners Movie), Stuart Campbell (Baptiste, Castlevania: Lord of Shadow 2) and Corin Silva (The Bay, Escape Room 2).
Summary
SAS Rogue Heroes is an impressive wartime drama with a modern twist, a superb cast, and a terrific story to tell.
If you happen to be overseas and you don’t want to miss out on the latest episodes, there is still a way to watch SAS Rogue Heroes on the BBC iPlayer if you use a VPN to help you.
ExpressVPN is the one to go for. Just sign up, download the app, log in, connect to a UK-based server, and then log into the BBC iPlayer from abroad as usual.
SAS Rogue Heroes comes from the brains behind Peaky Blinders, and you don’t want to miss what could well be the next big BBC TV drama.
