How to watch the Rio Olympics online from anywhere

Chris has a passion for helping you watch your favourite TV abroad. When he isn't helping you he can be found watching football, browsing Netflix or watching a good documentary.

Rio Olympics

The Olympic games for 2016 start on 5th August 2016 and take place until the 21st August.

If like me you’re excited to watch many of the events then you’ll probably have started to consider where you can watch your favourite online.

Unfortunately although the Olympics is a massive sporting event it’s the case that not all countries are showing the games live and some are only showing a handful of the most popular events.

If you’re looking to view online then you might be even more out of luck depending on who is covering the Olympics in your country.

The great news is there is a way to access most of the Olympic coverage by using the UK’s BBC iPlayer. If you’re outside the UK then you won’t directly be able to watch but with a simple solution explained in this article you will be able to.

So let’s find out how you can watch the Rio Olympics online from anywhere.

How to watch the Rio Olympics online from anywhere

Near full coverage of the Olympics is being shown on the BBC in the UK. The BBC have an online service called BBC iPlayer that allows viewers to stream the games online.

If you’re outside the UK and you try to view online you’ll be blocked with a message similar to the following.

Content blocked

An example of a block message you may see.

The good news is there is a really simply solution that allows you to appear as if you are in the UK and so rather than see the block message above you’ll be able to watch all of the events shown live online regardless of where you are in the world.

The magic solution is a small tool called a VPN.

A VPN is just a little piece of software you download to your computer or app for your tablet or phone.

It then allows you to connect to another country and virtually reside there. Any website you then visit thinks that you are in that country and so instead of blocking you they’ll stream the content, in this case, the Olympics.

Below I’ll show you where you can get a VPN and how to use it to watch the Rio Olympics from anywhere in the world.

Where to get a VPN service

VPN services are available from a huge range of different providers and most cost about the same.

Unfortunately although they all cost similar there is a massive difference in the type of service you get. Some services are excellent and others less so.

It’s hard to determine who offers a fast service that will allow you to avoid buffering until you sign-up.

I’ve been testing some of the top providers to see who offers the best VPN for streaming the Olympics anywhere in the world and come to the conclusion that the following three are the best solution.

  1. IPVanish
  2. ExpressVPN
  3. Overplay *

All you need to do is click on one of the provider names above to visit their site and from there you can sign-up to their service. Once you’ve signed up all you need to do is continue reading below where I’ll show you how you can use the VPN software or app to watch the Olympics.

*Not suitable for mobile or tablet use.

How to use the VPN service

Once you’ve signed up to one of the providers above the process is really easy.

You can download the desktop software or the apps for your mobile or tablet or you can download both if you want.

Once downloaded and installed all you need to do is connect to the United Kingdom server. Once connected visit the BBC iPlayer website when the event you want to watch is being streamed live.

If you want a little more detail I’ve put together a really simple step-by-step guide below using the IPVanish service on a Windows computer but it’s the same on a Mac too. The other providers are the same too just the software layout will look a little different.

Using on a phone or tablet app is even easier and self explanatory.

IPVanish :

  1. Visit the IPVanish website and sign-up.
  2. Download the software from the apps section of the website.
  3. Install and run.
  4. Click Server Selection.
  5. Click UK Media and Gaming.

The IPVanish software will now take care of all the hard work and make connection for you.

This should take a few seconds only.

Once the IPVanish software tells you that it has connected all you need to do is visit the BBC iPlayer website when the Olympic events are taking place and you’ll be able to stream live to any country in the world.

Enjoy all the sporting action.
