Looking for a TV show to really sink your teeth into? If so, Not Going Out could be the perfect show for you.

The BBC sitcom is one of the longest-standing British sitcoms ever, so much so it’s currently ranked second, and I can’t see it stopping anytime soon.

With almost 100 episodes (and counting), there is more than enough to keep you busy.

Quick Guide: How to watch Not Going Out

  1. Sign up for ExpressVPN.
  2. Download the app, sign in, and select ‘United Kingdom‘.
  3. Go to BBC iPlayer.
  4. Start streaming the show.

However, if you’re living, working, or travelling abroad, you won’t be able to access the show on BBC iPlayer. This is because of the BBC’s regional block that prevents overseas viewers from accessing their content.

Thankfully I can help.

In this guide, you’ll discover the one way you can unblock the show from anywhere, so you can stream until your heart’s content.

What channel is Not Going Out on?

Not Going Out is available to watch on the UK TV channel BBC One and its online streaming service BBC iPlayer.

If you’re overseas outside of the UK, you won’t be able to access the TV show without my help.

How do I watch Not Going Out where I am?

Unblocking Not Going Out is simple and for this, you’ll just need a ‘VPN app‘.

But what is a VPN app?

VPNs, also known as Virtual Private Networks, are simple-to-use security apps that keep you and your private data secure online.

They work by hiding your actual location and providing you with a new virtual location. By doing so, websites and apps like BBC iPlayer will think you’re in whatever country you’ve connected to using your VPN.

In return, you can access Not Going Out and all other BBC content without any restrictions.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched BBC iPlayer while I’ve been travelling. Using a VPN allows you to have some home comforts when you’re overseas; I love it.

With a click of a button, you can unblock online services like:

  • ITVX
  • Channel 4
  • 7Plus
  • 10Play
  • Peacock TV
  • Netflix (other region’s libraries)
  • Hulu
  • Disney Plus
  • And more…

Where to get a VPN?

If you hop on Google looking for a VPN, you’ll be hit by hundreds of options. And trust me, most of them aren’t worth your time or money.

To prevent you from choosing a poor-quality VPN service, I’ve tested the top services around and found the following to be your best options:

  1. ExpressVPN – Our #1 Recommendation!
  2. NordVPN
  3. Surfshark VPN

ExpressVPN is my top recommendation for you as during my tests; they provided me with the fastest connection speeds, which are ideal for streaming in full HD.

I even managed to stream Downton Abbey for my Mum without any problems.

I liked their VPN app as it’s simple to use and doesn’t provide too many confusing options. There is even a quick connect button allowing you to make a connection in seconds.

While they’re my top choice for you, there are two alternatives I recommend; NordVPN and Surfshark VPN.

All three services work extremely well with BBC iPlayer (not many services do). And they come with a 30-day money-back guarantee; it’s a risk-free investment.

So while ExpressVPN was certainly my favourite, you’re free to choose!

How to stream Not Going Out outside the UK

Follow these 5 easy steps to unblock Not Going Out in your country.

Step 1

Head to ExpressVPN and choose a VPN package. I picked their 12-month package, as it came with a 49% discount and 3 additional months for FREE. It’s an excellent deal if you ask me.

This will let you watch more shows throughout the year and it works out much cheaper than paying month by month.

Step 2

Download the ExpressVPN app to your device(s). You can get the app from the ExpressVPN website or your device’s app store. Log in using your email and password.

Step 3

Click ‘Selected Location‘ and choose a United Kingdom location to join. Click the ‘Connect‘ button.

What’s Not Going Out all about?

Let’s talk about Not Going Out.

The premise and plot of Not Going Out

Produced by Richard Allen-Turner and Jon Thoday, this British comedy follows a character named Lee.

Lee is as unambitious as they come, he sits on the sofa all day doing absolutely nothing, and he might occasionally venture to the pub with his mates.

Sounds like a good life, doesn’t it?

However, he begins to develop some drive when he meets the girl of his dreams and seeks to pursue her. While this isn’t a bad thing for Lee, it does pose many issues as he tries to rejig his entire life.

The show is set over the course of many years, and you get to see his character truly develop.

I like it when TV shows do this; it allows you to develop a deep connection with the characters, which I think makes the TV show even better.

The main characters and their roles in the show

Lee

He’s the protagonist of the show; he’s lazy, unmotivated, and is after the woman of his dreams. Could she turn him into an honest, hard-working man?

Kate

This is Lee’s landlady; she was scored by another character called Tim and develops a close bond with Lee after he moves into her home.

Tim

He’s Lee’s best friend and is the brother of another character called Lucy.

Lucy

She’s one of the main characters of the show. She’s a successful businesswoman who’s the total opposite of Lee.

Critical Reception of Not Going Out

While the show has been excellent over the years, the recent reception hasn’t been great. I guess it’s what happens when you have the second-longest run in British TV history.

iNews said, “Twelve series in, the comic timing is still spot on, and the cast has great chemistry, but the script just isn’t funny as it should be”, and proceeded to give the show 2/5 stars. Talk about a letdown.

However, if you watch the show from the beginning, there is plenty to salvage this one low season. I wouldn’t let a few negative reviews put you off; after all, fans love the show.

Who stars in Not Going Out?

Sally Bretton

Born in Hertfordshire, England, this actress has been in the industry since 1987 and has starred in shows such as Beyond Paradise, Death In Paradise, Thanks For The Memories, Casualty, Lewis, and My Family.

Katy Wix

This Cardiff-born actress/writer is best known for her role in the TV show Torchwood. However, she’s starred in others such as Ted Lasso, Ghosts, Big Boys, Here We Go, The Witchfinder, The Windsors, and The Reluctant Landlord.

Hugh Dennis
