How to watch My5 abroad in just 5 steps

Chris has a passion for helping you watch your favourite TV abroad. When he isn't helping you he can be found watching football, browsing Netflix or watching a good documentary.

If you’re looking to watch My5 abroad then this guide is for you. I’m going to show you the quickest and easiest way to watch My5 anywhere in the world and all it’ll take is just 5 simple steps.

My5 is the online streaming service for Channel 5 and if you love Channel 5 TV programmes then you’ll probably have used My5 before to watch catch-up TV.

When you’re abroad outside the UK and you try to access My5 instead of being able to watch catch-up TV from Channel 5 like normal you’re blocked from viewing.

Using a simple app called a ‘VPN’ you can unblock My5 abroad and watch from any country in the world. Below I’ll show you how.

Watch My5 abroad

If you’re abroad outside the UK and you’ve already tried to access My5 then you’ll know you’re blocked from viewing. Instead of being able to watch the programmes you want to watch you’re instead hit with a message that looks a bit like this:

My5 Blocked

It doesn’t need a university degree to work out why you’re blocked. You’re not in the UK and so the site blocks you from viewing. Or as Channel 5 themselves say “you must be located in the British Isles to view this content.”

So if you’re in the EU, America, Australia or anywhere else in the world you’re blocked from viewing.

To unblock My5 abroad you’ll need to get yourself a VPN app.

A VPN is a security tool that protects your online privacy. One of the features of the tool is allowing you to disguise your online location and make it appear as if you’re somewhere else.

VPN services cost a few pounds per month and are usually charged in US Dollars. The longer you sign up for the cheaper they become. If you’re planning on being abroad a while then big savings can be made signing up for longer.

You can use the VPN app on Windows or Mac computers or laptops and Android or Apple tablets and phones.

Follow the 5 steps below to get started.

How to watch My5 abroad Step-by-Step

  1. Visit the VPN provider NordVPN and sign up for their service by clicking here.
  2. Once you’ve completed sign-up go to the VPN Apps section of their website or your regular app store and download and install the correct app for your device.
  3. Open the app and when prompted login with the account details you created when you signed up.
  4. On the world map select the United Kingdom and click on it to connect.
  5. Once the app has connected visit the My5 website.

You can now watch any programmes on the My5 website anywhere in the world as if you were in the UK.

If you don’t currently have a My5 account then you’ll need to create one but apart from that, you can now enjoy some of the best TV from Channel 5 regardless of where you are in the world.

Take a look at the example image below which shows the two simple steps you need to connect on a Windows computer. It’s the same on a Mac computer and even easier on a tablet or mobile.

Is a VPN even legal and how does it work?

You’ll be pleased to know that VPN services are entirely legal. Their main purpose is to protect your privacy online. A side feature of that is allowing you to disguise your online location.

The VPN acts as a sort of middle-man between you and the My5 website.

When you’re abroad and you go to the My5 website you’re making a direct connection. The My5 website can see where you’re from based on your internet connection so it’s relatively easy for them to block you from watching.

When you use a VPN your connection firstly goes to the NordVPN server in the UK and from there on to My5. The My5 website only sees the request from the NordVPN UK server and so streams the programme you want to watch to it. The NordVPN server then passes this stream back to you.

It’s a seamless process that you won’t even know is happening but the upshot is, you can watch My5 abroad from any country in the world.

My5 have now blocked all access from all VPNs apparently. It says so on their website.

Most services try to block VPNs, but generally they continue to work.

    • Helen N says:

Yes, I found that recently too. I wonder if other channels will follow suit.

    • Pam Greatorex says:

I found the same. I’m so disappointed! I used to watch Our Yorkshire Farm with my 94 year old mum from Australia using ExpressVPN but now we are blocked! I’ve downloaded Ghost VPN but that is also blocked. Do you have any workarounds? I’d really like it if Mum and I could watch Series 5.

      • Chris says:

        Hi Pam,

        It’s working fine with NordVPN.

However, your first port of call should be to your current service to see if they have any knowledge of a solution.
