One of the most famous races of all time is back for it’s 40th running (pun intended)… the London Marathon.

Each year thousands of participants run 26.2 miles through the streets of London to achieve their best running times, and those who aren’t taking part can watch it on TV.

Below I’ll show you the quick and easy way you can live stream the entire London Marathon from any country in the world.

So let’s get to it.

Where is the London Marathon shown?

The marathon will be shown on BBC iPlayer. However, if you are living outside of the UK and its territories, you will find that you can’t access the streaming platform due to geo-restrictions, blocking it to everyone outside of the UK.

This isn’t great if you are living overseas in countries such as Australia, Canada, India, the US or any other for that matter.

Luckily for you, I have a solution that will have you watching the London Marathon in the United States, Canada or wherever you happen to be a matter of minutes.

How can I watch outside the UK?

To watch the London Marathon outside of the UK, you will need a VPN app.

The original purpose of a VPN is as an internet security tool that was developed to protect users from having their data stolen while they are surfing the web.

However, you may also use a VPN to connect your internet to servers located in another country, tricking websites and streaming platforms into thinking you are in another region.

This is very useful for when you want to access overseas content that is usually blocked.

A VPN such as ExpressVPN will provide you with everything you need to watch the London Marathon in full HD, giving you crystal clear streams thanks to their ultra-fast connections to servers around the globe.

ExpressVPN works exceptionally well with BBC iPlayer. It’s worth noting that not all VPN services do.

You may also want to check out NordVPN and CyberGhost, both offer competitive services and are up there with the best, so the choice is yours.

When is the London Marathon taking place?

This year’s London Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, 4th October 2020, with the first group starting at 06:15 UTC (07:15 in the UK).

Different groups will be running at different times, the main ones being:

  • Elite Women’s – 06:15 UTC
  • Elite Men’s – 09:15 UTC
  • Wheelchair – 12:10 UTC

How will this year’s event differ?

This years event will be slightly different from the previous years due to the current circumstances regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rather than the event physically taking place on the streets of London, the race will be performed virtually for the fun-runners for the first time ever. Runners from all around the world will be able to take part in the marathon.

There is an expected 45,000 participants taking part and will have 23 hours 59mins to complete the 26.2-mile event either by running or walking their way to the virtual finish line.

Due to the race being virtual, all participants can run any route they want, anywhere in the country.

As I mentioned previously in the article, there will be an Elites event taking place in a secluded loop of St James’s Square which will be separate from the virtual event.

Who to look out for this year?

One of Great Britain’s best athletes will be taking part in the Elite Men’s as a pacesetter, no other than Sir Mo Farah. He will be leading the way for those who wish to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Joining him will be several of the best marathoners of all time such as Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei from Kenya, as well as Great Britain’s Chris Thompson and Ben Connor.

Needless to say, the competition will be fierce.

Summary

With the 2020 London Marathon just around the corner, many of you will be looking for ways to stream the event live to your devices.

To do so, you will need access to BBC iPlayer who are streaming the event live. The problem is iPlayer is only available to UK residents.

To bypass the restrictions that are in place and to watch the London Marathon in any country, you will need to use a VPN.

I strongly recommend that you use ExpressVPN as they provide a world-class service that will work perfectly with BBC iPlayer and you’ll have no problem streaming the race.

Grab yourself a VPN from ExpressVPN and enjoy watching the full race live.
