Carolina, who originally hails from Argentina is a movie buff through and through. She enjoys nothing more than binge-watching the latest Netflix series and is a big fan of their 'Originals' line. Her favourite movie is Frozen and she's a big fan of The Good Place & The Dragon Prince.

Joker is the latest movie based on a DC Comics character that was released in cinemas in 2019, but is it on Netflix?

In this article I aim to find out and will let you know how you can get watching right now.

The film was an instant worldwide box-office success and acclaimed by international critics, it achieved 11 Academy Award nominations, winning two.

With all the hype around this movie, it’s expected you want to get streaming.

But what happens when we want to watch Joker on Netflix? Is it available? Keep reading this article, and you’ll find the surprising answer!

Is Joker available on Netflix?

The short answer is Yes. The long answer is Joker is only available on Netflix Australia and Turkish Netflix.

The thing is you just can’t access Netflix Australia from your location unless you’re actually in Australia. If you’re not then you’ll get the selection for your country… which sadly, doesn’t include Joker.

But before you give up, let me tell you, that you don’t necessarily have to be physically in Australia to enjoy its Netflix library as there’s a sneaky trick to get watching.

All you need is a VPN app and below I’ll explain all.

What is a VPN?

A VPN is a virtual private network that works as an intermediate between the internet and your connection to protect your privacy online.

But how does a VPN work?

By allowing you to connect to a server placed in a different location to yours, it lets you browse the web as if you’re in that location.

As a side benefit, it allows you to unblock streaming services that have geo-restrictions, or as in this case, to access Netflix’s different libraries around the world.

So, with a VPN, you can connect to a server in Australia and watch Joker on Netflix as if you were there.

Among the many VPN services available on the market, I recommend ExpressVPN, which is the best because of their fast streaming speeds, user-friendly interface, and their 30-day money-back guarantee in the case you aren’t satisfied with the service.

Two other excellent options that work perfectly unblocking Netflix Australia are NordVPN and Surfshark.

The final choice is yours!

What’s Joker about?

Famous for being Batman’s main villain, the Joker has gained popularity over the years and has been incarnated by famous actors.

Directed and produced by Todd Phillips, this new redemption of the character doesn’t focus on the superhero and villain dynamics, but on the psychological and emotional traits of such a complex character.

The year is 1981, Arthur Fleck is an aspiring stand up comedian who suffers from mental health issues in a Gotham City full of crime. Treated like a pariah by society, he will embark in a journey of violence, giving birth in the process to his alter-ego, the Joker.

Sometimes a character study, sometimes a powerful critic of how mentally ill people are treated, the movie is provoking and also problematic.

Who stars in the movie?

The Joker is the kind of character that always seems to have fallen in the ultimate hands, and can hardly be played by another actor. But almost all the time, every actor who has been in the Joker’s shoes has managed to leave a mark.

This time was Joaquin Phoenix’s turn, and he did a superb job.

His performance earned him the Oscar as Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in the 2020 ceremony. He also won the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The cast is completed by Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Frances Conroy (American Horry Story), among others.

Summary

Joker is the latest movie belonging to the DC Comics universe. It was a big surprise at the box office, and it earned 11 Academy Awards nominations including Best Picture.

But surprisingly, it’s not widely available for streaming, except on Netflix Australia and Turkey.

So, if you already have a Netflix account, it’s time you got your hands on a VPN service like ExpressVPN and start enjoying Joker. Plus a lot of more content by unblocking Netflix catalogues from other countries.

A VPN will also protect your privacy online while giving you more movies and TV shows to binge. Definitely, it’s a deal you can’t miss!

      Hi,

Thanks for your comment. When the article was written it was available on Netflix Japan. As you correctly say it’s not available there anymore.

However if you connect to Australia or Turkey you’ll find it on the Australian and Turkish Netflix catalogue.
