How to watch IMDb TV outside the US

A connoisseur of 80's action films like 300, Predator, and Terminator, Lee blends his extensive movie knowledge with adeptness at streaming shows worldwide. His love for cinema permeates his lifestyle, from attending Comic Con to sporting Star Wars socks.

IMDb TV (Internet Movie Database) is the relatively new US-based free on-demand video streaming service owned by Amazon Prime Video. The streaming platform was originally known as IMDb Freedive.

The ad-supported service allows you to stream some of the best television and movie content around, completely free, which I’ll cover in more detail later.

The problem is, it’s only available in the US, so if you’re travelling or living overseas, you won’t be able to access IMDb TV outside the US. Countries such as Canada, New Zealand, and Australia aren’t able to stream from this popular platform due to geo-restrictions.

However, I have a solution to this problem that I’ll be discussing in this article, one that’ll have you unblocking IMDb TV in a matter of minutes.

What you need to stream IMDb TV

To play IMDb TV outside of the US isn’t as complicated as you might think; all you need is a VPN app.

A VPN app is an internet security tool that helps you mask your location (real IP address) and gives you a virtual location (IP address) of your choosing.

By changing your virtual location, you’ll be able to make websites such as online streaming platforms think you’re in another country, so if you’re travelling overseas, you can access all the good stuff from back home.

In this instance, by using a VPN to connect to a US server location (like New York), IMDb TV will think you’re actually in the US and give you unrestricted access to its platform.

Where to get a VPN for IMDb TV

If you’re looking to avoid the geo-restrictions and unblock IMDb TV outside the United States to gain access to all the movies and TV shows on the free service, then the best VPN for IMDb TV is ExpressVPN.

Slow speeds are a thing of the past. ExpressVPN has some of the world’s fastest connection speeds which are perfect for watching video content online.

They have a vast selection of VPN apps covering Windows, macOS, mobile devices, Amazon Fire TV devices, Linux, and more. ExpressVPN even has support for Smart TVs, Google Chrome and Firefox.

ExpressVPN also has an excellent online customer support team and a 30 day money-back guarantee, your investment is virtually risk-free.

They also have helpful features such as a kill switch, smart DNS proxy, unlimited bandwidth, and they work well with most other streaming sites. (Their smart DNS proxy helps you unblock more streaming platforms).

But, if you’re like me and like to shop around, you should check out NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN too.

All 3 VPNs are the best for unblocking IMDb TV from anywhere outside the US.

  1. ExpressVPN – Highly recommended!
  2. NordVPN
  3. CyberGhost VPN

Stick to the VPNs above and avoid using a free VPN service. Free VPNs have many problems that will hinder your ability to watch IMDb TV and will likely leave you with an error message (at best).

To unblock IMDb TV outside of the US, follow the steps below. I’ll be demonstrating each step using my recommended provider, ExpressVPN.

  3. Choose a US server location to connect to, such as New York, by clicking ‘Selected Location‘, then click the Connect button to establish a connection to the US server.
  4. Now that your VPN connection is established, head over to the IMDb TV website (also available on the Amazon Prime Video app) and sign in to your IMDb app. If you don’t have an IMDb account, create a new IMDb account.

What can I watch on IMDb TV?

IMDb TV, formally known as IMDb Freedive, has a considerable amount of content available on its service, considering that IMDb TV is free.

If you want to watch IMDb TV, you’ll find it doesn’t have a dedicated app, but you’ll be able to watch IMDb TV using the standard IMDb app through your IMDb account.

If you enjoy watching TV shows, then you’ll be happy to know they have enough to keep you entertained for several years, never mind weeks.

TV Shows

One of the most popular TV shows available is Mad Men, which follows the life of advertising CEO Donald Draper as he navigates his way to the top of his industry throughout the 1950s-1960s.

However, if this isn’t you’re thing, another TV show that’s proven to be extremely popular is Lost. In the mid-2000s, Lost was one of the most talked-about TV shows of the time.

There’s also an extensive collection of classic TV shows such as Columbo, 3rd Rock From The Sun, The Rifleman, Murder She Wrote, and many more.

But, if you fancy yourself to be a bit of a movie buff, then you’ll love what IMDb TV offers you. Their extensive collection of popular movies covers all genres ranging from Action to Horror.

A popular movie is The Social Network: the story of Facebook’s creation by Mark Zuckerburg. Other films are Despicable Me 2, Gravity, Megamind, and more.

Or, if you fancy giving yourself a chill, you’ll want to check out IMDb TV’s horror movies, which contains spine chilling movies such as Scary Stories, Grave Encounters 2, As Above So Below, Tales Of Halloween, and more.

Due to Amazon (parent company of the IMDb TV app) having production contracts with big studios such as Warner Bros, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and MGM Studios, there’s never a shortage of content.

The only downside to the IMDb website is that you can’t download TV shows to watch later. You’ll need an internet connection to watch them on your mobile web browser if you want to watch on the move, Oh and a connection to a VPN server.

There are far too many movies and TV shows for me to discuss in this article, so go and check IMDb TV out using ExpressVPN; you’ll be impressed. It’s one of the best free streaming services around.

IMDb TV recently launched in the UK and is available through Amazon. If you’re interested in accessing this edition of the service, connect to the United Kingdom on ExpressVPN and head over to the UK Amazon site.

What else can I use the VPN for?

VPNs have a vast array of uses other than unblocking IMDb TV.

As I mentioned above, one of the primary uses of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is to help protect your data and information from being accessed online by unsavoury characters (hackers, marketers, and even governments).

Speaking of streaming platforms, VPN services like ExpressVPN are excellent for accessing geo-restricted content like overseas Netflix libraries. Each country has its own Netflix content that varies depending on what country it is.

The US Netflix library is far more extensive than most other Netflix libraries, so using a VPN to unblock Netflix US is a no brainer.

You’ll also be able to access other streaming services such as Disney+, Amazon Prime TV, ITV Hub, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock TV, and many more from all around the world.

Apart from watching movies, one of my favourite things to use a VPN is to access sporting events like the Premier League (soccer) matches. The possibilities are endless.

IMDb TV is a brilliant FREE streaming service that’s only available to those living in the US. This means anybody outside of the US, such as the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc, won’t be able to access the streaming platform without help.

If you’re travelling, this can be a real pain.

By using a VPN like ExpressVPN, you’ll be able to watch IMDb TV from anywhere in the world and access content from back home with just a few clicks of a button.

ExpressVPN will mask your real location (actual IP address) and make the IMDb app think you’re in the US, allowing you to watch IMDb TV outside the states.

Follow the step by step guide earlier in this article and get one of the best VPNs, ExpressVPN. You’ll be able to unblock IMDb TV outside the US with no trouble at all, avoiding the dreaded error message.

I’m in New Zealand and don’t have a VPN to my knowledge.
Using the imdb app on my Android phone I can watch imdb. My problem is that I can’t figure out how to chromecast a show running within my imdb app, across to my TV set. I know my chromecast works because it does so for another video streaming app I run on my phone.
When I Google for help I get a suggestion that I should click the Specifications arrow that is below my name in the app. I can’t see such an arrow. The Settings icon doesn’t include it. Another googled suggestion is that I should instead install an imdb TV and movies app.
    What do you suggest? Thanks

      Hi Neil,

Sadly I don’t know the answer to this one. However, some apps do prohibit the use of streaming to TVs.

Have you had similar issues with other streaming apps? If not then it could be that the IMDb app restricts streaming direct to TVs.
