If you’re like me and love watching movies, you’ll be glad to know that one of the most significant annual award ceremonies is back. That’s right; I’m talking about the Golden Globe awards.

But the awards aren’t shown in every region, which is a bit of a bummer if you ask me.

If you’re a US ex-pat living, travelling, or working abroad, you’re probably wondering how you can watch the awards ceremony where you are.

Luckily, you’re in the right place. What I’m going to show you will have you streaming the Golden Globes from anywhere in the world. And it takes less than 5 minutes to set up.

Keep reading to find out how.

Where are the Golden Globes being shown?

To watch the Golden Globes, you’ll need to have a valid subscription to a service from back home (the United States).

There are several options for you, and the likelihood is you’ll already have one of these subscriptions in place.

The TV streaming platforms showing the Golden Globes are:

  • NBC
  • YouTube TV
  • FuboTV
  • DirecTV Stream (formerly AT&T TV Now)
  • Hulu + Live TV
  • Sling TV

If you don’t fancy paying for another TV service, there is an offer you can take advantage of. YouTube TV currently offers a 7-day free trial, so you can sign up, watch the Golden Globes, and then cancel your subscription before you get charged.

Or, if you like what they offer, you can keep the service running and you’ll be charged after the initial free 7 days.

If you already have one of the above subscriptions, don’t worry if you can’t access it in your current location; I’ll show you how to avoid any regional blocks in a minute.

How do I watch the Golden Globes where I am?

To watch the Golden Globes outside the US, you need to use a ‘VPN‘ app.

VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) are traditionally used as online security tools by businesses, governments, and corporations to secure their private data. However, more recently, VPNs have grown in popularity as they can also be used to unblock overseas content.

Can you see where I’m going with this?

You can use a VPN to avoid any regional restrictions that online streaming services have, allowing you to access a live stream of the Golden Globes as if you were back home in the US.

If you’re paying for a subscription, why shouldn’t you be able to use it overseas just because you’ve headed off on vacation at the time?

This neat trick works on the majority of online streaming services and all of the ones mentioned in the previous section.

Where to get a VPN?

While there are many decent VPNs around, there are only several I would nominate for an award (and recommend to you). They are the following:

  1. ExpressVPN#1 Recommended!
  2. NordVPN
  3. Surfshark VPN

ExpressVPN takes the top spot as it gives you the best connection speeds around. You’ll be able to watch your favourite celebs in full HD without any lagging video issues. I also found them to offer an easy-to-use app which is available on the most popular devices.

Alternatively, if you’re not feeling ExpressVPN, you could try NordVPN and Surfshark VPN.

I tried these two out also, and while they offer comparable services I found ExpressVPN to be slightly easier to use and more reliable.

All three services come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so it’s a risk-free investment and you’re free to pick.

What are the Golden Globes?

The Golden Globes are a film awards show that’s been held annually since 1944. The first event saw winners such as Paul Lukas, Jennifer Jones, Akim Tamiroff, and Henry King.

The awards are curated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which aims to award excellence in film and TV shows domestically and overseas from the previous year.

As the Golden Globes are one of the first award ceremonies of the year, they are known for being less predictable than the Oscars, which is another prestigious affair.

Plus, the Golden Globes are well known for being a bit of a boozy affair, with many celebs getting a little too drunk, often resulting in some hilarious and unscripted moments.

However, even though there’s more alcohol involved in this event, I must say it’s a “slap-free event”, unlike the Oscars (I’m looking at you, Will Smith).

The event has been running for over 80 years now, which is a huge feat, and I can’t see them stopping anytime soon.

Where do the Golden Globes take place?

The first Golden Globes event occurred in the 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles, California. However, since 1961 it has been held in The Beverly Hilton Hotel (in Beverly Hills); it’s a pretty grand location and is perfectly suited for the event.

The hotel boasts a huge room capable of holding 1,300 guests consisting of your favourite celebrities.

Can you imagine 1,300 drunk celebs? As I said, there will be some funny and possibly controversial moments coming up, I’m sure.

Who are the Golden Globe hosts?

Each year the Golden Globe hosts change and have had some pretty big names hosting the event. Some of the most popular names include Tim Curry, Joan Collins, Pierce Brosnan, Andy Samberg, Tina Fey, and Ricky Gervais.

If you didn’t see Ricky Gervais in his very final Golden Globes outing, it’s not for the faint-hearted. For everyone else, take a look.

Gervais is well known for his controversial approach to the awards and often telling close-to-the-line jokes about celebs… it’s great if you ask me. The Guardian described his opening monologue as “pulls no punches.”

This year’s host is Jerrod Carmichael, the popular comedian best known for The Carmichael Show.

When are the Golden Globes?

You can stream the Golden Globes on Tuesday, January 10th.

It’s on at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT (USA). Be sure to consider the time difference if you’re overseas; you don’t want to miss it.

Golden Globes nominations

There are so many nominations, too many for us to cover here. I’ve hand-picked some of the most interesting to look out for.

Kevin Costner

Best performance by an actor in a TV series (drama)

This legendary actor has been nominated for this award because of his role in the hit TV show Yellowstone. The show is a huge success and has had many people talking; even my parents won’t shut up about it.

Costner has some stiff competition within this category from the likes of Jeff Bridges, Diego Luna, Bob Odenkirk, and Adam Scott.

Jenna Ortega

Best performance by an actress in a TV series (musical or drama)

This young and upcoming actress has a hit on her hands, Wednesday (the Addams Family reboot). Her role in the show was pivotal and left people dying to see more.

She faces some strong competition in this category, but I reckon she can clinch it. Some of her competitors are Selena Gomez, Jean Smart, Kaley Cuoco, and Quinta Brunson.

Avatar: The Way Of Water

Best motion picture (drama)

The James Cameron movie nobody asked for, but we’ve all been eagerly waiting on… it’s only taken 14 years.

While the movie is a hit, it faces competition from Elvis, TAR, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Fabelmans.

Usually, I’d say Avatar 2: The Way Of Water would be my favorite to win the award, but with Elvis being critically acclaimed, who knows?

Elvis

Best motion picture (drama)

As mentioned briefly above, the biopic movie about the musical genius that kick-started a musical revolution, I’m talking about The King himself, Elvis Presley.

Now the movie has a hill to climb as it’s up against Avatar 2: The Way Of Water. However, If I Can Dream, I’d say the movie is a strong contender to win Best motion picture. The movie is Always On My Mind, and I’ve got a Burning Love for the music which you Can’t Help Falling In Love with.

OK, I’ll stop being a Hound Dog I don’t want to get you All Shook Up

The Bear

Best television series (musical or comedy)

The Bear is the FX TV show about a young chef who’s worked in fine dining all his life. He returns home to take over his family’s sandwich shop, which is a far cry from what he’s used to.

The show is excellent but is going head to head with Abbot Elementary, Hacks, Only Murders In The Building and Wednesday.

Ana de Armas

Best actress in a motion picture (drama)

When I saw that this beauty had been nominated, I could not but mention her.

She’s well known for her roles in Knives Out, Deep Water, Ghosted, War Dogs, Knock Knock, Blade Runner: 2049, and No Time To Die.

Her latest movie Blonde has been one of her best acting roles and is the reason why she’s been nominated.

Top Gun: Maverick

Best motion picture (drama)

It was inevitable that the sequel to the 1986 classic “Top Gun” would get nominated for an award. The movie was outstanding; it had a bit of everything; excellent acting, an invigorating storyline, and some of the best action scenes.

What more could you want?

Hopefully, it wins the award as it deserves it, but it does face competition from Elvis, Avatar 2, TAR, and The Fabelmans.

Jennifer Coolidge

Best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a series

If you grew up in the late 90s to early 00s, you’ll know precisely who this actress is; it’s none other than Stifler’s Mom (aka the “MILF” from American Pie).

She’s been nominated for her performance in The White Lotus, in which she was outstanding.
