Gentleman Jack is the newest TV series co-produced by the BBC and HBO. Created by Sally Wainwright, it’s a British-American drama set in 1832.

The first episode was premiered worldwide on April 22nd on HBO, and it will be released on BBC One in the UK on May 19th.

The story revolves around the life of Anne Lister, a famous landowner, industrialist, who is openly lesbian.

Unless you have a cable subscription or live in a country where the TV series is shown you could be left with no options to watch. With spoilers already filling the internet, it’s getting more challenging to avoid them.

Thankfully there’s a really neat way you can watch Gentleman Jack in any country and below I’ll be explaining how.

What you need to watch Gentleman Jack

HBO broadcasts the series in all the territories where it’s available, such as the US, Europe, and Latin America. Outside those regions, the options for watching are severely limited.

On May 19th, it will be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer for free in the UK.

If you live outside the UK or if you don’t have a cable or HBO Go subscription, you won’t be able to watch it.

The solution is to use a VPN app such as ExpressVPN so you can watch from any country for free on the BBC iPlayer.

Where to get a VPN

There are several options on the market, but ExpressVPN is among the best choices.

They offer some of the best speeds which will allow you to stream Gentleman Jack in high quality avoiding any buffering issues.

Even though you have to pay a fee (all the VPN services charge fees), you can save a lot (49% to be exact) by subscribing to the yearly package allowing you to watch loads of other TV shows.

Another two good choices are NordVPN and CyberGhost. If you’ve got time to search about then check them out too.

What’s the story behind Gentleman Jack?

The series is based on the life of Anne Lister, and the diaries she left written in a secret code. She used this scheme to conceal her several love affairs with other women.

Lister was a famous Yorkshire landowner who came back home to be in charge of the lands and coal mines she inherited from her aunt.

She was a woman ahead of her time who didn’t pay attention to society’s prejudices, and she never hid the fact she had an attraction to women. In fact, she’s considered the first modern lesbian.

The title of the series refers to the mocking and disrespectful way her neighbours called her due to her masculine way of dressing and speaking and her attraction to women.

Anne Lister was an intelligent and brilliant woman who opened her way of doing business in a world dominated by men.

Who’s in Gentleman Jack?

Suranne Jones fills Anne Lister’s boots, bringing a magnificent performance. She’s followed by Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) as her sister Marian, Timothy West (Last Tango In Halifax) as his father, and Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’s Diary) as Aunt Anne Lister.

Sophie Rundle stars as Ann Walker, the wealthy woman and heiress Anne tries to marry.

In Summary

Gentleman Jack is coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK for free. It’s also available on cable in the US, Europe, and Latin America on HBO and HBO Go.

If you don’t have a subscription to cable and you don’t plan to, and also you don’t live in the UK, the only way to watch this series is with a VPN.

ExpressVPN is the best choice. You only need to create an account, download and install the app, and for a very affordable fee, you can watch this series and much more.
