How to watch CTV Go overseas
Chris
Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.
If you’ve got CTV Go and you’re outside Canada then you’ll know that you’re blocked from watching. In this article I’m going to look at how to watch CTV Go overseas so you can stream your favourite content regardless of where you are in the world.
CTV has some of Canada’s favourite TV shows and if you’re got a subscription to a participating television service provider then you’ll know that CTV Go is an excellent app. Available for Android, iOS and Windows it includes some of the best shows including The X-Files, Canada AM, Grimm and a whole host of other great content.
Like many Canadians if you’re outside Canada then you’re unable to access CTV Go which is a little unfair as you already have a subscription to one of the participating networks. If you’re on a short vacation then you could miss some of your favourite shows but if you’re away even longer then it’s annoying missing all the great content.
So let’s find out how you can watch CTV Go overseas.
How to watch CTV Go overseas
If you’ve ever tried to visit the CTV Go website or launch one of the apps outside of Canada then you’ll know like me that it just isn’t possible. Instead of watching the show you wanted to watch you’re hit with a big restrictive block message like the one below.
Sorry, an error has occurred. Please try again later.
There is no actual “error” it’s purely because you’re overseas and CTV Go knows that.
How does CTV Go know I’m overseas?
Every internet connection is assigned what is known as an IP Address and from this IP Address it’s easy to determine your location. Just check out this website to see exactly how close to your location your IP Address shows you.
So what we need to do to watch CTV Go overseas is to alter our IP Address to one inside Canada and then we can trick the CTV Go app or website into thinking we are physically are there.
To do this you’ll need a service called a VPN that comes as software for your computer or an app for your tablet or phone.
VPN services cost between CAD $6 – $12 per month and are cheaper if you sign up for an annual package. I recommend using ExpressVPN because they’ve got a risk-free 30-day money back guarantee and you can pick up 3-months free on their annual package saving up to 49% off the standard price.
Let’s take a look at where you can get a VPN to watch CTV Go overseas and how to use it.
Where to get a VPN
There are tons of companies selling VPN services because their main purpose is to protect your privacy. Changing your IP Address is just a part of this privacy protection.
With so much choice available it can be confusing and time consuming visiting all the different sites.
To save you the headache of trawling through thousands of providers I’ve put together a list of three of the best VPN providers to watch CTV Go overseas.
All you need to do is click on one of their names to visit their website and follow the sign-up process.
Once you’ve signed up continue reading below as I’ll show you just how easy it is to use the VPN service.
How to use the VPN to watch CTV Go
Now that you’ve signed up to a VPN provider listed above you now need to download their software or app.
You can find the Windows or Mac software on the VPN provider’s website or if you prefer to download their mobile app check out the Android Play Store or Apple Store, type in the name of the VPN provider you signed up to and you’ll be able to download their app.
Once installed all you need to do is connect to a server in Canada.
The apps are extremely easy to use, just login and select Canada.
The Windows and Mac software looks a little more complicated but is exactly the same process. After you’ve installed it and logged in all you do is click Canada and connect.
As an example below I used ExpressVPN, all you need to do is click Server Selection, then Map and then locate the Canadian server closest to you. ie; if you’re in Europe or Africa try and select a Canada option on the east of Canada. If you’re in the US, Japan, Australia or that side of the world then select a Canadian server on the west coast.
ExpressVPN will let you watch CTV anywhere
Once connected simply launch the CTV Go app or visit the CTV Go website and you’ll be able to stream all of the available shows and live TV just as you would back home in Canada.
