How to watch BFI Player outside the UK

Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.
BFI Player is one of the most unique movie streaming services we’ve seen.
It’s essentially the Netflix for classic and cult movies and shows.
Unfortunately though it’s a UK based service and so it’s restricted to watching from within the UK only.
If you’re a classic movie buff or there’s something on BFI Player than you can’t stream on any other service and you’re outside the UK then you’ll find yourself blocked.
In this guide I’ll be showing you the super easy way you can unblock BFI Player and watch from anywhere in the world.
What you need to watch BFI Player
When you visit the BFI Player website or you use their app it first checks your location. If it sees you’re outside the UK then it will block you from subscribing or watching.
Your internet connection gives away what country you’re in.
So to beat this block you’ll need a VPN app.
A VPN is a completely legal privacy app that lets you disguise your location.
There are hundreds of VPN apps available and while they’re much the same some work better than others.
I tested a whole bunch of them and my favourite was ExpressVPN. It didn’t buffer like some of the more random ones you might find searching Google.
If you want a few options then I also found a few others that worked well and you should check out these three choices:
- ExpressVPN – Highly recommended
- IPVanish
- NordVPN

Choose a VPN and sign up for their service
To watch BFI Player outside the UK you’ll need to sign up for one of the services above.
They all cost a couple of dollars but it’s best to sign up for a year because you’ll make the biggest saving.
Choose any of the three above and then follow the steps below.

What is BFI Player?
BFI Player is the British Film Institute’s online streaming service similar to Netflix or BBC iPlayer.
Launched in 2014 the cult film streaming service is available on Windows and Mac computers, via an app for Android and iOS tablets and phones and a number of other devices.
The service costs from £4.99 per month which is approximately US $6.43 at current rates.
There’s a 14-day free trial available which you can take advantage of when using a VPN app from ExpressVPN or one of the other recommended providers and watch in any country.
The service launched with over 1000 titles and has continued to expand marketing itself as one of the leaders in “independent and specialised film”.
In 2018 these were the 50 most watched movies on the service.

BFI Player won’t play outside UK with Express VPN
Hi Masha,
Have you tried connecting to a few different UK locations?
Good article
One problem for me
I did everything and accessed free content but to pay for programs you must use a credit card issued in the UK
Blocked without a UK credit card
That’s a shame Byron. Have you looked into a UK Virtual Credit Card. You may be able to get these as they are available in other countries.
