To say sitcoms these days are rather hit and miss would be something of an understatement. So, when a good one comes along, any fan of British comedy is going to want to see it.
That is certainly the case with Avoidance, the new sitcom created by hugely popular British comic Romesh Ranganathan.
The problem is that while many classic British sitcoms are broadcast all over the world, this new arrival hasn’t quite earned that level of global recognition yet which means that you will need to watch it on British TV.
That is a problem if you are abroad for work, on a holiday or live overseas permanently.
Fortunately, it is still possible to watch Avoidance online no matter where in the world you are. And in this guide, we are going to tell you everything you need to know.
Where is Avoidance being shown?
Avoidance is being broadcast on BBC One and is also available to watch live or on-demand on the BBC iPlayer.
But if you try and log into the BBC iPlayer from abroad you will find that the service is blocked and unavailable. This means that to enjoy watching Avoidance abroad, you need another little tool to help you.
How can I watch Avoidance where I am?
To watch Avoidance outside the UK, you will need the help of a VPN.
A VPN (or Virtual Private Network to give it its full title) is an online privacy and security tool that a look of people use to protect their privacy and security when they go online.
A quirk of how VPNs work means that, as well as fulfilling this primary function, they can also be used to unblock streaming services from overseas such as the BBC iPlayer.
If you haven’t already guessed, this means you can watch Avoidance in any country.
Where to get a VPN?
With hundreds of VPNs available online, you will need to find a VPN service that can work with the BBC iPlayer and offers the features you need to stream content online successfully.
Our recommended VPN for unblocking the BBC iPlayer to watch shows, including Avoidance is ExpressVPN.
ExpressVPN is an uber-fast VPN provider that is ideal for streaming shows online.
It has apps for almost any device you can think of which means you can install the ExpressVPN app onto whatever device you use to stream shows, from smartphones and tablets to laptops, Smart TVs and more.
There is even a superb 30-day money-back guarantee which means you have plenty of time to try ExpressVPN out before you commit.
Both of these VPNs offer all of the features you will need to stream Avoidance and come with great money-back guarantees too. The choice is down to you.

What is Avoidance all about?
Avoidance is not a surreal, laugh-a-minute joke fest. Rather it has been described by the Guardian as “delicate, funny and truthful… [and] has you reaching for the word bittersweet.”
It tells the tale of Jonathan, a beta male or everyman, who is thrown out by his partner Claire due to his inertia.
After initially failing to appreciate the gravity of the situation, Jonathan has to adapt to his new reality, not least for the sake of his and Claire’s son, Spencer.
Jonathan does his utmost to shake off his torpor for the sake of this son and much of the series revolves around his escapades with the boy.
His character flaws are ones that many people will recognise but few TV shows have zoomed in on making this a truly unique show.
Who stars in Avoidance?
For all its great ensemble cast, Avoidance is undoubtedly a Romesh Ranganathan vehicle.
He co-wrote and stars as Jonathan in the show and the only character that really manages to steal any of the limelight is Spencer, his son, played wonderfully by Kieran Logendra.
The role of his long-suffering wife Claire is played with no lack of skill by Jessica Knappett (Drifters, The Inbetweeners Movie).
Danielle, his sister is played by Mandeep Dhillon (Some Girls, CSI: Vegas, Red Dwarf: The Promised Land) while her wife Courtney is portrayed by Lisa McGrillis (Hebburn, Mum, King Gary).
But this is definitely the Romesh show and he handles a complex character with great comic skill.
Avoidance is a cracking addition to the British sitcom repertoire, but if you want to watch it abroad, you will need a VPN to do so.
ExpressVPN is the best choice to make. Just sign up, download the app, connect to a UK server, and you can access the BBC iPlayer and enjoy Avoidance no matter where in the world you are.
To say it will make you laugh and cry is a bit of a cliché, but in the case of this show, it’s absolutely true.
