Chris
Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.
If you’re an Aussie and you currently find yourself in the UK then one thing you’re likely to miss is Australian TV.
In this guide I’m going to show you the incredibly easy way in which you can watch Australian TV in the UK and you’ll be surprised just how little work it is.
There is nothing wrong with UK TV at all but if you’re like me then there are some Australian TV shows that you can’t do without.
You’re going to need a service called a VPN to watch Australian TV in the UK my favourite is ExpressVPN but keep reading and I’ll show you where to get one and how to use it.
How to watch Australian TV in the UK
If you’re outside of Australia and you try to watch one of the Australian networks like SBS, ABC or Foxtel then you’ll be blocked from viewing with a message similar to the following:
An example of a block message you may see.
The reason you’re blocked is because the website you’re visiting knows you’re outside Australia and in the UK.
Every internet connection is assigned an IP Address which is unique. An IP Address is a series of numbers that is similar to a telephone number.
Just like a telephone number area code, an IP Address gives away your location so when you visit your favourite Australian TV network it is easy for it to know that you’re in the UK and not Australia.
To avoid this you’ll need to get yourself a service called a VPN.
A VPN is a way of protecting your internet privacy. One of the ways it does this is by disguising your location.
You can use the VPN to alter your location to Australia and so when you visit any TV network website it will see that you’re in Australia even though you’re in the UK.
Where to get a VPN
VPN services are available from many different companies.
Simply searching Google for the term “VPN” will lead you to thousands of options which can be confusing.
To watch Australian TV in the UK you’ll need a VPN service that supports Australia and is also fast enough to stream video all the way from Australia to the UK.
I’ve tested a range of services and found the following three all to be ideal to watch Australian TV in the UK. Just select one, visit their website and sign-up.
- ExpressVPN – Recommended provider
- IPVanish
- NordVPN
Once you’ve visited one of the providers above and signed up read below where I’ll show you how you can use the VPN to watch Australian TV in the UK.
How to use the VPN
Once you’ve signed up to one of the VPN providers above you’ll need to download their software or app to your computer or other device.
You can download software for Windows or Mac from the provider’s website or the app from your app store. Once downloaded and installed all you need to do is select Australia and press connect.
Once connected you can visit any Australian TV website and watch from the UK or anywhere else in the world.
Below I’ve put together a simple step-by-step guide showing you how to do it using ExpressVPN on a Windows PC. The process is much the same with the other providers and on other devices too.
ExpressVPN:
- Visit the ExpressVPN website and sign-up.
- Download the Windows software from the “Products” area.
- Install, run it and log in.
- Once open select Selected Location, then All, then Asia Pacific and finally Australia.
- Press Connect.
Watch Aussie TV anywhere.
The ExpressVPN software should take between 15-30 seconds to connect.
Once it’s connected all you need to do is visit the website of the TV network you want to watch.
Rather than see the block message you saw earlier you’ll be able to watch Australian TV in the UK.
The good news is it works for any service. If you want to watch your subscription service like Foxtel Go or you just want to watch a free to air network such as ABC or SBS then you can do both.
Once you’ve finished watching simply press Disconnect on the ExpressVPN software or app.
You can reconnect at any time and watch more shows from Australian websites.
