How to watch US Netflix Anywhere

Chris

Chris

Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.

Netflix is the king of entertainment but if you’re outside America, your selection is incredibly limited.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could tap into US Netflix and watch all their content?

If you’ve heard of VPN apps, then you can, but it’s not so simple – there are A LOT of questions.

  • Which VPN apps work with US Netflix?
  • Will you sign up and waste your money?
  • Which one is fast enough for good quality streaming?

I feel your pain.

It’s the reason I’ve put together this guide.

Inside I’ll show you exactly which VPNs work with Netflix – chosen through our time-consuming testing – so you can login to US Netflix and access much more content with your regular account.

It’s accurate that way back in 2017 Netflix cracked down on overseas viewers who wanted to watch American Netflix, but this is 2023 and things have massively changed since then.

So if you want to super-charge your Netflix account, keep scrolling.

Which VPN works with Netflix?

There are hundreds of VPNs for Netflix to choose from and, indeed, the majority don’t work with American Netflix.

There are however a select few who have worked hard to ensure their app continues to work.

My favourite without question is ExpressVPN. They’ve been working continuously since the end of 2017 with American Netflix with very few periods of downtime and if you get stuck, they have live chat to help you out.

All three below work with Netflix:

  1. ExpressVPN – No.1 recommended
  2. NordVPN
  3. Surfshark

It’s important not to just randomly search Google or your favourite search engine for ‘VPN’ because the chances are most won’t work and you could end up wasting money signing up for them only to find they don’t work.

ExpressVPN

Netflix using ExpressVPN on all devices

ExpressVPN offers you the fastest VPN connections in the world, making it the ultimate service for streaming video content in full 4K UHD from platforms such as Netflix.

It provides over 3000 servers located all around the world, covering all major locations in the US, such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and many more.

So you won’t have any trouble finding a fast and secure US server to connect to unlocking US Netflix content.

ExpressVPN will allow you to bypass ISP (Internet Service Provider) throttling, meaning your download speeds are unrestricted, giving you the ultra HD content you deserve.

Their service offers a wide range of user-friendly apps for most of the popular devices such as Windows, Mac, Amazon Prime, Android, and iOS. This makes it the perfect VPN to use when looking to stream video content to your devices.

They also have a top customer support team and offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

ExpressVPN is easy to use, fast, reliable, secure and has many US servers to connect to, making this the best VPN provider for your Netflix account.

NordVPN

NordVPN is one of the best VPN services out there and works seamlessly with your Netflix account.

Not only do they offer a staggeringly huge 5438+ servers for you to connect to in over 59 countries (including the US), but they have an excellent track record when it comes to your privacy.

Their ability to connect you to some of the fastest VPN servers will ensure you can watch all of your movies/TV shows in the way they were intended to be watched, in full 4K Ultra HD, with no buffering or pixelated images.

Your internet speed will be unthrottled so you can watch US Netflix outside the US and other regions such as the UK, Canada, or Japan without losing streaming quality.

NordVPN offers fantastic customer support that provides you with 24/7 support, which is great for any questions you may have about setting up your VPN.

However, their easy to use dedicated apps are super-friendly, so I doubt you will need to use the customer service very much.

Just like the previous VPN I mentioned, NordVPN has an extensive selection of apps covering most of the popular devices such as Mac, Windows, Amazon, Linux, Android and iOS.

So if you wanted to watch US Netflix, then NordVPN is one of the best VPNs around, especially when it comes to accessing streaming platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.

Surfshark

If you want one of the cheapest, fastest VPN services on the market, then look no further.

Surfshark offers prices as low as $2.50/month (which is cheap as far as VPNs go), but they don’t shirk on quality.

They provide you with 1700+ servers located in 63 countries (including the US), each server will give you super-fast connection speeds perfect for watching US Netflix and streaming other ultra HD content.

What makes Surfshark unique is how well it works with Netflix. It gives you the ability to unlock 15 regions of Netflix content, which is tens of thousands of hours worth of additional content right at your fingertips.

You’ll have access to many regional Netflix libraries such as Canada, the UK, Australia, and of course, the US. Allowing you to unblock Netflix and watch US Netflix from anywhere in the world, e.g. the UK.

Surfshark also allows you to have an unlimited amount of simultaneous connections, so you’ll be able to use their service on ALL of your devices with ease.

Their built-in Camo-mode will hide your VPNs usage from your ISP, ensuring that no throttling will occur, keeping your internet speeds as fast as possible, which is something you want when streaming/watching US Netflix in HD quality.

You won’t be disappointed.

How do I avoid the Netflix ‘Proxy Error’

Unblocking Netflix is usually straightforward. However, occasionally when you are using VPNs with Netflix, you will get an error message.

Some of them are known as, Netflix Proxy Error, Netflix Error 07037-111, Netflix Error M7111-5059, and a few other names.

Netflix proxy error

This usually occurs when Netflix has blocked a VPN’s IP address that’s being used.

But, if you are one that is known to work with Netflix (like the ones in my list), then you will need to change what VPN server you are connected to. You can do this by simply switching to a different city/server.

If it is still not working, you may need to change your VPN service to a different one. If you are using a VPN on my list, then this is a rare occurrence, but can happen from time to time.

However, if you are convinced it should work, you can try to clear your cache, which I’ll discuss with you next.

How to clear your web browser cache

If you’re having trouble, you’ll want to clear your web browser cache. Here’s how to do it on the most popular browsers:

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome, click the three dots in the top right corner.
  2. Click more tools.
  3. Clear browsing data.
  4. Change the time range to “all time”.
  5. Tick/check all the boxes such as “Cookies and other data on-site”.
  6. Also, tick/check “Cached images and files”.
  7. Finally, click “Clear data”.

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox, click the menu button (three lines).
  2. Select privacy and security.
  3. In cookies and site data, click “Clear Data”.
  4. Remove the tick/check from “Cookies and site data”.
  5. Tick/check “Cached web content” and click clear.

Edge

  1. When using Microsoft edge, click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
  2. Then click “settings”.
  3. Then under Clear browsing data, select “Cookies and saved site data” and also “Cached data and files”, and click clear.

Now that your data and cache is clear, retry using your VPN with Netflix. If you still get an error message, you may want to contact their support or change the VPN provider you are using.

How to clear your phone cache

If you are using your mobile phone to access Netflix while using a VPN, you will need to do the following to clear the cache in your Netflix app.

This is important because without it, even with the VPN working, you may still only see your usual local results.

iOS

  1. On your home screen, go to your device settings.
  2. Select general.
  3. Select Apps/Applications.
  4. Next, select manage applications/all applications.
  5. Scroll down to Netflix and select it.
  6. Click on storage.
  7. Select clear data/storage, then click “OK”.
  8. Go to Netflix and open the app.

Android

  1. Open your device menu.
  2. Click on settings.
  3. Go to Apps.
  4. Find Netflix and click on it.
  5. Next, click on storage.
  6. Lastly, click on the button that says “Clear Cache”.

Once you have done these steps, open up the Netflix app, and try to watch a movie using your VPN.

Contact the Customer Support

If none of the above works, it is time to give your VPN provider a message.

The providers I have mentioned have outstanding customer service, and will most likely have a solution for you.

Make sure you explain your problem fully so that they know exactly how to help you best.

Then they will be able to give you a step by step guide helping you get you back up and running.

Why should I use the US Netflix service?

OK, so you may be wondering what makes the US Netflix service so good?

Well, when it comes to Netflix regions, the US Netflix library is the best around, it is literally rammed with content.

In fact, they have a much larger library than any other country.

The US library has a staggering 50% more movies/TV shows than the UK Netflix library, for example.

  • US Netflix: Over 1000 TV shows/ Over 4500 movies.
  • UK Netflix: Over 500 TV shows/ Just over 2000 movies.

That is tens of thousands of hours worth of content that you are missing out on.

Not only is their Netflix library far superior, but they also have access to some content that is only available in the US region.

TV shows such as the popular 90s show Sister Sister, What’s New Scooby-Doo?, and The Bachelor.

As well as exclusive movies such as Quantum Of Solace, John Henry, How High 2, and Killing Hasselhoff.

Is my Netflix account safe?

To put it simply, yes your account will be very safe.

VPNs were actually developed to be a way to increase your security while using the internet. A VPN will protect your data from being leaked to companies, governments, hackers, and even your ISP.

That’s right, even your Internet Service Provider won’t know what websites you are viewing, meaning they will have no access whatsoever to any of your information while you are connected to your VPN.

By using a VPN, you are as secure as you can possibly be, so there is no need to panic.

How to use a VPN to watch US Netflix

Using a VPN for American Netflix has got incredibly easy in recent years and it only requires a couple of clicks on the VPN app.

So even if you’re not great with technology, you’ll be able to unblock American Netflix and watch from anywhere in the world.

Follow these steps to unblock American Netflix in your country.

  1. Visit the ExpressVPN website by clicking here and sign up for their service.
  2. Download the ExpressVPN app from your app store or the ‘Products’ area of the ExpressVPN website.
  3. Open the app and login with your account details.
  4. Then press the ‘Selected Location‘ (1) button.
  5. Next, press ‘United States‘ (2).
  6. Depending on what device you’re using you may also need to press ‘Connect‘.

Once you’re connected, you can visit the Netflix website or open your Netflix app.

You’ll now have access to a whole range of new and different movies and TV shows from the Netflix library.

Do I need another Netflix account?

Not at all. The great thing about Netflix is they allow you to log in to their service from anywhere in the world.

The only difference is each country has a different version of Netflix and selection of movies and TV shows.

By using a VPN, you trick Netflix into thinking you’re physically in another country. You can just log in with your regular account details.

What devices can I unblock US Netflix on?

The good thing about all three recommended services is they work on all types of devices.

This means you can unblock US Netflix on your tablet or phone.

You can also watch on your laptop or computer.

Also if you’ve got an Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, then you can watch American Netflix on these too.

Is watching Netflix outside the US via VPN legal?

VPN apps are completely legal in almost all countries, so you have no reason to worry.

At the very worst using one is against the terms & conditions of your Netflix account. Still, there are zero reports of anyone getting into trouble for using a VPN to access another region.

When you think about it, Netflix doesn’t lose out and you get more content.

What’s the best VPN package to take?

Signing up for a VPN isn’t complicated. The biggest decision you’ll need to make is how long you’re going to subscribe for.

Usually, this will be between 1 month or 12 months.

It’s best to sign up for 12 months for the simple reason that it’s a lot cheaper than paying monthly. For example, the ExpressVPN 12-month package is 49% less expensive than their monthly package and it comes with three months completely free.

This also means you’ll be able to watch more American Netflix for longer and it won’t cost you as much.

Is there a free way to watch US Netflix content?

I’m the biggest fan of ‘free’ going and if I can get something for free, then I’m all over it.

Unfortunately, ‘free’ VPN services for Netflix are about as real as unicorns and pots of gold at the end of rainbows.

There are some free VPN services out there, but the most reliable tech websites advise against them. That aside, they don’t work with Netflix.

Too many users try to climb onto free VPN services meaning Netflix has locked them down and blocked them. Even if you did manage to find that holy grail free VPN service that worked there would be so many users that it would be just too slow.

Free VPNs are also a good way to infect your device with malicious software and open yourself up to data leaks. SO I would avoid free VPNs if I were you.

What else can I do with the VPN app?

One neat feature is you’re not merely limited to unblocking the US Netflix service.

You can also unblock other sites such as UK Netflix, Canadian Netflix, Australian Netflix or other geo-restricted regions, streaming content from all over the world.

A few other good services include the Korean and Japanese Netflix sites too. You can access these by quickly changing server.

On top of that, you could use the VPN for it’s intended purpose, to protect your privacy online. That’s outside the scope of this article, but this neat guide from Wired will tell you more.

In Summary

Learning how to stream Netflix from the US is easy.

You’ll need to get one of the apps that are tested and working. I recommend ExpressVPN because they have some of the best speeds allowing you to stream in high-quality.

However, NordVPN and Surfshark also work well, so have a look around if you’ve got time.

When you’ve signed up, download their app and connect to the United States. You’ll now be able to access Netflix and other video streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video from anywhere in the world.

Streaming will have never been this fun.

What country are you watching US Netflix in? I would love to know, so drop me a note in the comments section further down.
