How to watch Alone UK anywhere in the world

David has been watching TV outside of his home country for over 12 years. In addition to his streaming expertise, he has a wealth of experience in watching sports and documentaries, having spent many years following these genres. He is an avid fan of The Detectorists and Blue Planet, and also has a keen interest in English football.
The Alone survivalist show has finally reached the UK after the huge success of the original American series and the Australian one as well.
If you like reality TV shows that take people out of their comfort zone, then this is the one for you. The British contestants come from all walks of life and are dropped into the Canadian wilderness, where they are left to fend for themselves.
The challenge is to last for as long as possible with a big cash prize for the person who can hold out the longest.
Quick Guide: How to watch Alone UK
- Sign up for ExpressVPN.
- Download the VPN app, sign in, and select ‘United Kingdom‘.
- Go to Channel 4.
- Start watching Alone.
It is compelling stuff and, as a big fan of the US version of Alone, I am hugely excited to see how the Brits fare in comparison. The problem is, I am based overseas right now and, if you, like me, are an ex-pat or are travelling for work or pleasure, you have a problem.
Alone UK is not currently being broadcast anywhere outside the UK. This means that if you want to watch the show, you will have to find a way around the geo-restrictions that are in place.
Well, panic not, because I have been doing this for a while and, if you keep reading, I am going to explain exactly how to watch Alone UK anywhere in the world.
Where is Alone UK being shown?
Alone UK is being broadcast in the UK free-to-air on Channel 4. It is also being streamed live and on-demand on the Channel 4 streaming platform (formally known as All 4).
However, the Channel 4 streaming service is not accessible to anyone outside the UK, which is a huge problem if, like me, you are overseas and desperate to see how Alone UK is going.
But, as I already said, there is a simple way to get around this block using an everyday online app that some people are already using, and many others definitely should be.
I’ll show you exactly what it is and how to use it in the next section.
How do I watch Alone UK where I am?
If you want to watch Alone UK on the Channel 4 streaming service from wherever you are in the world, you will need to use an app called a VPN.
A VPN is best known as an online security and privacy tool. It works by encrypting your online data and sending it through an external location. This helps to help hide your identity and location from the websites you visit.
Because these VPN servers can be located all over the world, you can assume a location from just about anywhere in the world as well.
By connecting to a UK-based server, you can assume a British IP Address and make it look to sites and apps like Channel 4 that you are in the UK even when you aren’t.
By doing this, Channel 4 will let you watch Alone UK live and on-demand no matter where you are in the world.
Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? But I know from experience that it works. It’s how I will be watching Alone UK from Asia, and there is no reason why you can’t do the same.
Where to get a VPN?
You need to make sure you choose the right VPN if you are going to enjoy the British version of Alone outside the UK. There are so many around, but some are far better than others.
We have tested all the top VPNs with the Channel 4 streaming service from locations all over the planet, and our recommended VPN off the back of all these tests is ExpressVPN.
ExpressVPN comes with a massive network of UK-based servers, all of which were able to unblock the Channel 4 streaming service in our tests.
It also offers fast and dependable connection speeds, a huge range of apps that work with all the most popular streaming devices, and there is even a 30-day money-back guarantee which gives you plenty of time to try before you buy.
You’re also not solely limited to streaming Channel 4, and it’s good for BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Sky Go and other services from across the globe.
If you prefer to look around, NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN are two other VPN providers worth considering. They both come with everything you need to watch Alone UK from abroad on the Channel 4 streaming service, and both also come with a long money-back guarantee.
But it is ExpressVPN that fared best in our testing and is our recommendation for the best VPN for the job. It’s the one I routinely use when streaming shows outside the UK, and it hasn’t let me down yet.

What is Alone UK all about?
The premise of Alone UK
Alone UK follows the same very simple premise as the US and Australian versions that have gone before it.
It sees eleven individuals being dropped into the wilderness and having to survive for as long as possible with a small amount of survival equipment.
Alone, as the name suggests, it differs from other survival reality shows in that it doesn’t play on the dynamics of groups of people, but instead leaves people completely isolated. Barring a medical check-in, they will have no contact with other people at all.
Contestants can leave at any time if they decide to tap out and will be withdrawn if they fail a medical.
The contestant that survives the longest in Alone UK will walk away with a cool £100,000 prize.
The main characters and their roles in the show
The characters, for want of a better term, are the contestants in the show. There is no presenter as such, so the show is entirely focused on the contestants and their lives and survival efforts in the wilderness.
In the first series of Alone UK, the contestants include a wild swimming coach, a war studies student, an NHS Project Manager, a PR Executive, and a clothing designer.
Critical reception of Alone UK
It’s fair to say that the critical reception of Alone UK has been mixed so far with viewpoints ranging from completely thrilling to downright dangerous.
Writing in The Guardian, Lucy Mangan sees the funny side of the show, asking if “any of this survival show’s contestants even been outside before?”
She notes that Brits are not as outgoing with their emotions than American contestants and suggests that is to the detriment of the show in the early episodes. But she has a solution.
“There is still the traditional Alone viewing fun of placing bets on who will be the next to go, who is in with a chance, and who will be the underdog that has us all rooting for their successful bowel evacuation. As well as which contestant, secretly, we all hope will be eaten by a bear.”
I’ve played a variation of this game at home, and it is tremendous fun.
Who stars in Alone UK?
Part of the fun of Alone UK is getting to know the contestants as the series goes along, so it would be a bit of a spoiler to tell you too much about them here. But to whet your appetite, here are the basics about each of them:
- Alan: Aged 43 and an autistic Forestry Manager.
- Elise: Aged 32 and a PR Executive.
- Eva: Aged 25 and an NHS Project Manager.
- Javed: Aged 58 and a Business Coach and Mentor.
- Kian: Aged 19 and a War Studies Student.
- Laura: Aged 40 and an Entrepreneur.
- Louie: Aged 28 and a Builder.
- Mike: Aged 49 and a Joiner.
- Naomi: Aged 26 and a clothing designer.
- Pip: Aged 47 and a Wild Swimming Coach.
- Tom: Aged 39 and a Company Director.
Summary
Alone UK may be a bit of a marmite show, but for many, it will be compelling viewing.
Which contestant is the one that barely lasts half a day before chopping into their leg with an axe and having to be airlifted to hospital?
See, you really want to know don’t you?
