How to watch Stan outside Australia

Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.

In this article I’m going to show you how to watch Stan outside Australia from any country in the world.

Stan is the latest homegrown movie streaming service for Australian residents and aims to go head to head with Netflix. Netflix has been criticised as offering a poor selection of movies for Aussie users and after cracking down on VPN use to access other regions Stan could just be in with a chance.

From quality American and British programming to Stan exclusives like the excellent Wolf Creek there is plenty to watch but if you’re outside Australia you’ll be disappointed because you’ll be blocked from viewing.

The good news is you can watch your Stan account in any country in the world with a simple solution that I’m going to explain in this guide. I’ve tested it as far away as the UK and it works fine so distance won’t be an issue.

How to watch Stan outside Australia

If you’re travelling, on holiday, an expat or just outside of Australia for any reason and you’ve tried to watch Stan then you’ll be blocked with a message similar to the one below.

Stan blocked

When you visit the Stan website it checks your internet connection and if it sees that you’re outside Australia then it blocks you.

The good news is with a service called a VPN (Virtual Private Network) you can give the impression you are in Australia even though you’re in another country.

If you’ve already got a Stan account this means you’ll be able to watch it wherever you are. If you’re already outside Australia and you don’t already have an account then you’ll also be able to sign-up and then watch Stan outside Australia.

Using a VPN is really easy and if you use a provider such as CyberGhost VPN it works for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and even the Amazon Fire TV Stick so no matter which device you want to watch Stan overseas on then you’ll be able to achieve it with minimal effort.

In Summary: A VPN app allows you to watch Stan in any country.

Keep reading to find out where to get a VPN for Stan and how to use it on your device of choice.

Best VPN for Stan

Searching for a VPN can be a difficult task because there are so many companies all offering deals and trying to entice you in.

Unfortunately not all providers are suitable for Stan because they either don’t have an Australian server or they’re just too slow to stream video.

I’ve tested some of the leading providers to find out who offers the best VPN service for watching Stan outside Australia and come to the conclusion that CyberGhost is the best. If you want to shop around then the following three providers are all suitable for use for watching Stan outside Australia.

  1. CyberGhost VPN – Recommended
  2. NordVPN
  3. VPNCity

All you need to do is click on one of the providers names to visit their website and sign-up. Once you’ve signed up continue reading below to find out how to use the VPN service on your device to watch Stan outside Australia.

How to use the VPN

The process is really simple. Once you’ve signed up you’ll need to download the software or app for your device. You can find the software for Windows or Mac on the VPN provider’s website or the apps from the relevant app store.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the software or app you need to connect to an Australian server. Once you’ve connected all you need to do is visit the Stan website or launch the Stan app and you’ll be able to watch Stan outside Australia from anywhere in the world.

Below I’ve put together a bit more of a detailed guide using CyberGhost. It’s just as easy using the other provider’s too.

How to watch Stan outside Australia:

  1. Visit the CyberGhost website by clicking here and sign up.
  2. Download their app from the VPN Apps area of their website.
  3. Open the app and login.
  4. Press the More Locations button.
  5. Then press All Servers and finally Australia.

Stream Stan using CyberGhost.

The CberGhost app will now make connection for you, this should take around 15-30 seconds.

Once it’s connected restart your browser or open a new Incognito or InPrivate browser and just head over to the Stan website or open the Stan app if you’re using a phone or tablet.

If you’ve already got an account you can log in and watch like normal. If not you can sign-up and then watch anywhere in the world. There’s also a free 30-day trial of Stan if you only want to watch a few things.

    Thanks for the update Beena.

    Hi Josh,

Have you tried selecting a couple of different UK locations? Such as Kent, London, Wembley etc? If it’s still not working then it’s possible they have blocked access and you should request a refund from ExpressVPN as you have 30-days to test it.

    Hi Chris,
I’m using NordVPN from the UAE and it doesn’t have the option connect to an Australian Server. Any suggestions?

    • Chris says:

      Hi Mark,

You can find Australia on the map view or start typing it in the ‘Search’ box to locate it. Let me know if you’re still stuck.

  4. Des says:

Stan seems to be actively searching for IPs used by VPNs and blocking them. Haven’t tried Express yet, but Windscribe and Tunnelbear both no longer work.

    • Chris says:

      Hi Des,

Tested and confirmed working as of today using ExpressVPN. Have to use their ‘Brisbane’ server.

Are you getting some kind of error message Luke? Also what type of device are you trying to watch on?
