Formula 1 is back for the 2017 season and starts in Australia today at the Melbourne race course.
If like me you want to watch all the action but you don’t want to pay out huge amounts of money for cable TV subscriptions or you live in a country where it’s not even possible to pay to view then I’ve got the answer for you.
Around the world there are plenty of TV networks showing all the Formula 1 races live online for free and by using a service called a VPN you can access them.
This will allow you to watch the Formula 1 2017 season online for free from any country in the world.
So keep reading below where I’ll show you just how easy this is to achieve.
How to watch Formula 1 2017 season free online
There are lots of different websites showing official streams of Formula 1 such as Ten Play in Australia or Channel 4 in the UK.
If you try to access these websites and you’re outside the country they’re intended for then you’ll be blocked from viewing.
You’ll see a block screen similar to the one below.
The website blocks you because it knows you’re not in the country the video is intended for.
The good news is you can change your online location and appear in the country the video is intended for allowing you to bypass the block and watch the Formula 1 race.
To do this you’re going to need to sign up for a VPN service. If you don’t already have one then you can find out where to get one below.
Where to get a VPN
A VPN will allow you to change your online location.
There are thousands of VPN providers so choosing one can be difficult. It’s important to choose a service that is fast so you can stream video without interruption.
I’ve been testing a selection of services to find out which is the best for watching the Formula 1 2017 season and found that a company called IPVanish provided the fastest and best service.
A good service should cost between $5 – $10 per month depending on how long you sign up for. It’s worth signing up for a full year if you want to watch the whole 2017 season as it will make it cheaper.
My top three choices are below, feel free to pick any as they are all suitable to watch Formula 1.
Once you’ve signed up for one of the services above all you need to do is keep reading below where I’ll show you how you can use it to watch F1.
How to use the VPN
You need to download either the Windows or Mac software from the VPN provider’s website or the mobile app from your app store.

Below is a step-by-step guide using IPVanish on a Windows computer but the process is much the same with the other providers and even easier if you use a mobile.
- Visit the IPVanish website and sign-up.
- Click Apps and download their Windows software.
- Install and Run the software.
- Login when required.
- In the bottom right-hand corner select the country of the flag in the list above, eg; Austria to watch the Canada F1 on 11th June.
- Press Connect.
The IPVanish software will take care of all the technical side of things and make connection for you.
All you need to do is wait for it to connect which should take no more than 30 seconds.
Once it has connected just click the link in the schedule above, eg; Channel 4, ORF, TenPlay and you’ll be taken to the correct website to stream that race on.
Once you’ve watched the race you can simply press Disconnect on the IPVanish software and carry on as normal.
Enjoy the F1!
