How to watch Channel 7 outside Australia

Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.

Channel 7 is one of the most popular channels in Australia but watching when you’re outside the country can be difficult.

If like me you’ve tried to access Channel 7 online on the 7Live website while you’re outside Australia then you’ll know it’s blocked from viewing.

7Live is a great resource that includes Channel 7, 7two, 7mate, 7flix and Racing.

If you want to access the site overseas then you’re going to need a special tool and in this guide I’m going to show you exactly how that’s possible and just how easy it is too.

So let’s find out how by reading below.

How to watch Channel 7 outside Australia

If you’ve visited the Channel 7 website while travelling, on holiday, if you’re an Aussie expat or even if you’ve never been to Australia and just want to watch the shows on Channel 7 then you’ll be hit with a block message similar to the one below.

7live Blocked

If you’re outside Australia and you’re hit with the screen above it can be massively disappointing especially if there is something you want to watch on one of the channels.

When you visit the website it checks your location by checking your internet connection. It does this by checking something called your IP Address which is a unique set of numbers that allows websites such as 7live to determine your location.

The good news is that it is possible to alter your IP Address to one from a different location which means that when websites such as the 7live site check your location they see you somewhere other than where you really are.

In this case you can trick the 7live website into thinking you’re in Australia even though you’re not really and rather than being blocked like above you’ll be able to stream the shows you want to watch.

So let’s find out how you can do that.

How do I stream Channel 7 overseas

To stream Channel 7 overseas and trick the 7Live website into thinking you are in Australia you need to sign up for a service called a VPN or Virtual Private Network.

A VPN is a small piece of software you can download for your Windows or Mac computer or even an app for your phone or tablet.

Streaming video is resource intensive so you need a VPN provider that is fast otherwise you’ll be plagued with buffering and stuttering which will ruin your viewing enjoyment.

I’ve been testing some of the better providers to see how they perform and found the following three to be the best for streaming Channel 7 outside Australia on the 7live website.

  1. ExpressVPN
  2. IPVanish
  3. NordVPN

All three are good choices but I recommend ExpressVPN because they’ve got a 30-day money back guarantee.

Just click on one of the names above to visit their site and sign-up. Then continue reading below for instructions on how to use the service to watch 7Live.

How to use the VPN to watch 7Live

Once you’ve visited one of the sites above and signed up all you need to do is download their software for either your computer or mobile device.

Once installed it’s simply a case of connecting to their Australian server and then visiting the 7Live website to stream any content you want to watch.

Below I’ve put together a more detailed guide using ExpressVPN on a Windows PC but the process is the same on a Mac too and it’s even easier using one of the mobile apps.

ExpressVPN:

  1. Visit the ExpressVPN website and sign-up
  2. Download the Windows software from the apps area.
  3. Install and run the app.
  4. Press Selected Location
  5. Press All, Press Asia Pacific, Press Australia.
  6. The app should automatically connect but if not press Connect.

Unblock Channel 7.

The ExpressVPN software will now take care of connection for you.

This should take around 15-20 seconds. Once the software has connected all you need to do is head over to the 7Live website and you’ll be able to stream any of the content there regardless of where you are in the world.

The same VPN service can also be used to access other Australia TV services such as Foxtel Go, iView and others.

You can also use it to access international TV like BBC iPlayer from the UK.

Enjoy streaming Channel 7 and 7Live anywhere in the world.

      Hi Patrick,

You need to create an account to watch any content. Do you know why it won’t let you create an account?

Express VPN doesn’t work for streaming Channel 7 outside of Australia anymore.

    • Chris says:

Works fine, just tested after your comment. Use their Melbourne server.

Was able to stream the first episode of Season 11 of Farmer Wants a Wife, Wife Swap, Shipwrecked, First Dates and everything else.

I have NORD VPN on my computer, and link it to an Aussie address but still cannot get Channel 7 as I get a 500 message about Internal server error
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request.
Contact Support, yet my mobile phone works okay, any suggestions please.

Does this cost money? If so do you know how much?

I’ve been trying to do this for a few months now with no success. I have ExpressVPN on a flashed router which I use to connect to Australia. But when I access 7plus or 9now using my PS4 they still don’t work. I might try using the web browser you linked to instead and see if its the PS4 applications that are the problem.

    • Chris says:

      Hi Michael,

That might be specific to the PS4 like you think. Try on a computer, phone or laptop if possible as you’ll have more luck there.

      • Michael says:

        Hi Chris,

It was the PS4! I’ve fixed it now and it all works well. I love my ExpressVPN Flashed Router. It is so easy to change my VPN Country using the web URL on my smart phone. I can be sitting in front of the TV and just open the URL on my phone, login with my eyes, and select which country I want to be in. My wife is going crazy for The Block right now.

        Thanks,
        Michael
