How to watch Australian Netflix in Indonesia
Chris
Chris, a UK-born media connoisseur, is an expert in watching international TV. Known as "The Global Screen Wanderer", he has travelled extensively across the globe with long stints away from home. With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.
Indonesia is great but if you’re looking to watch Australian Netflix there you may find yourself out of luck.
Don’t worry though because in this guide I’m going to show you the really simple way you can watch Australian Netflix in Indonesia. All it takes is a simple app known as a ‘VPN‘.
If you’re an Aussie in Indonesia then you’ll know how beautiful the country is. From the mania of Jakarta to the beauty of Bali, Gili and the other islands.
You probably don’t have too much time to be bingeing Netflix but if you’re there for a while then you’ll know how poor Indonesian TV is. If you’re Indonesian then you’ll definitely want to expand your limited Netflix catalogue.
Below I’m going to show you how.
First Step, Get yourself a VPN
If you’ve accessed Netflix while in Indonesia then you’ll know how poor the catalogue is compared to the Australian one. Most of the movies and TV shows are old.
The good news is you can use a VPN app and make Netflix think you’re in Australia. The result? You can watch Australian Netflix in Indonesia.
For this you’ll need to get yourself a VPN service. Not all work with Australian Netflix and some are too slow to stream video. My favourite is ExpressVPN, they’re fast, easy to use and they’ve got a 30-day money back guarantee just in case it doesn’t work for you.
However, if you want to check out a few options then I suggest the following three.
My Top 3 VPN services for watching Australian Netflix:
- ExpressVPN – My recommended choice!
- NordVPN
- CyberGhost VPN
Simply choose one of the three providers above and sign up for their service, then follow the steps below.
If you’re in Indonesia for some time or you plan to be outside of Australia for a while it’s worth getting ExpressVPN’s 12-month deal. Using the link below will give you 3 months free on top which works out 49% cheaper than if you were paying on a monthly basis.

How to watch Australian Netflix in Indonesia
Now you’ve got a VPN you’ll want to use it to watch Australian Netflix in Indonesia.
I’m using ExpressVPN as my example because they’re currently my favourite provider. However, if you signed up to either NordVPN or CyberGhost VPN then the process is almost identical.
How to watch Australian Netflix in Indonesia:
- Sign up for the ExpressVPN service by clicking here.
- Then download their app for your device from their Products area.
- Open the app and login or activate it.
- Press Selected Location (1).
- Then press All Locations, Asia Pacific and finally Australia (2). You may need to use different locations such as Sydney – 2, Melbourne, Perth etc.
- The app should start connecting automatically but you may need to press Connect (3) if it doesn’t.
Now that you’re connected to ExpressVPN any websites or apps you use will think you’re in Australia rather than Indonesia.
All you need to do now is visit the Netflix website like normal or open the Netflix app on your device.
You can verify you’re on the Australian Netflix website by searching for movies that only Australian Netflix has and Indonesian Netflix doesn’t, like Justice League.
30-day money back guarantee
Will this work on a mobile or tablet?
Definitely. It works really well on a mobile or tablet either Android or Apple iOS.
All you need to do is sign up for the ExpressVPN service following the steps above. Once you’re connected to Australia open your Netflix app.
You’ll now be able to watch the entire Australian Netflix catalogue of movies and TV shows in Indonesia.
How does a VPN even work?
You’re probably thinking that a VPN must be illegal but you’d be wrong. VPN apps are completely legal and are a legitimate way to protect your online privacy.
Part of this privacy protection is disguising your location.
So when you’re in Indonesia you can make it appear as if you’re in Australia. This stops companies and pesky hackers from tracking your online movements.
The bonus is it also fools Netflix into thinking you’re in Australia which lets you watch Australian Netflix in Indonesia.
When you connect to the ExpressVPN app (or one from the other providers) all your data and requests are first sent to Australia, they’re then passed on to whatever website or service you’re trying to access. In this case Netflix.
Netflix only sees a connection from Australia and so let you watch the Australian catalogue.
The VPN service then sends all this data back to you in Indonesia. The best thing of all is the VPN app does all this for you and you won’t notice any difference than just using the web and Netflix like normal.

No problem Sandie. Hope you get well soon and can get out and explore… until then, enjoy Netflix 😀
This doesn’t seem to work for Netflix now…keeps asking to turn off proxy/VPN server.
Hi Sandie,
You’ll need to use “Australia – Sydney 2”. Just confirmed it works. Press ‘Selected Location’ then ‘All’ then ‘Asia’ then press the expansion button on ‘Australia’ and choose ‘Australia – Sydney 2’.
