With over 10 years of experience he has become the go-to guru for streaming content from home and abroad.
I’ve always been baffled why you can’t get a normal Amazon Fire Stick in Canada and I’m not talking about the new ‘Basic’ edition, but the fully fledged Fire Stick and Fire TV.
That’s one of the reasons why I’ve put this guide together to show you how to use an Amazon Fire Stick in Canada.
If you’re like me then you’ll want to use a real Fire Stick (or Fire TV) in Canada. If you’ve managed to get your hands on a Fire Stick from another country such as the USA or UK or you intend to then this is the guide for you.
Below I’ll show you how to use the Fire Stick in Canada and unblock the apps from the USA, UK and other countries.
How to use the Amazon Fire Stick in Canada
To use the Amazon Fire Stick in Canada you need to get yourself a VPN service.
A VPN service comes as an app you install on your Fire Stick that allows you to fake your location. It allows you to pretend you’re in another country such as the US, UK or elsewhere.
By using a VPN app you can unblock and watch apps from other countries, inside Canada.
There are only a handful of VPN services that work with the Fire Stick and Fire TV and three I’ve tested and work well are:
- ExpressVPN – My recommendation
- IPVanish
- StrongVPN
30-day money back guarantee
The first thing you need to do is choose a VPN service from the three above.
My recommendation is ExpressVPN. They work with more apps than most.
I also really like the fact they have a 30-day money back guarantee. This gives you plenty of time to test the VPN with your Fire Stick in Canada. If for some weird reason you can’t get it working then just get your money back, no questions asked.
They’ve also got a deal worth checking out that gives you 15 months for the price of 12. This equates to paying 49% less than if you paid monthly. If you’re planning on using the Fire Stick for the foreseeable in Canada then it’ll save you a considerable amount of money.
Next, follow the steps below to use the VPN with your Fire Stick.
Step 1: How to use the VPN with your Fire Stick
Hopefully you’ve now selected a VPN from the three above. If you can’t choose then don’t worry too much, just choose ExpressVPN as it’s my recommended provider.
Now just follow the quick steps below and you’ll be using your Fire Stick in Canada in no time. I’m using ExpressVPN as my example but it’s much the same with the other providers too.
If you’ve already signed up, skip step 1.
How to use the Amazon Fire Stick in Canada:
- Visit the ExpressVPN website by clicking here, choose a package length and sign up for their service.
- On your Amazon Fire Stick use the Search function to search for ‘ExpressVPN‘.
- Click on the ExpressVPN app and then press ‘Download’, ‘Get’ or ‘Install’.
- Press the Home button on your Amazon remote control and then find the newly installed ExpressVPN app.
- Click on it to open it and login when required.
- Press Choose Location (1) and then select the country of the services you’re trying to access eg; United States.
- Wait for the app to connect or press Connect (2) if it hasn’t automatically.
Once the ExpressVPN app has connected just press the ‘Home’ button on your Amazon remote control.
You can now open the app you are trying to watch.
For example if you wanted to watch NBC sports you would need to connect to the United States on the ExpressVPN app. If you wanted to watch BBC iPlayer then you should connect to the United Kingdom.
One app to check out is Netflix, simply by using the ExpressVPN app and connecting to the United States for example you can access the US Netflix catalogue on your Fire Stick in Canada.
30-day money back guarantee
Step 2: How to download apps from other regions
If you’ve got an Amazon Fire Stick from one country but you want to use apps from another then you may need to change your region.
Some apps such as the ExpressVPN app and Netflix app are available in all regions but most TV apps are restricted to the country they’re intended for.
You’ll need to first change your region by following the steps below:
- Visit the Amazon website and press My Account.
- From the Digital content and devices section select Content and devices.
- Then press Preferences.
- Select the arrow next to Country/Region Settings to expand the options.
- Select the country of the app you want to download, eg; United States and press Change.
- You’ll need to enter an address from the country you selected. You can use FakeAddressGenerator to find one.
- Once you’ve entered the address press Update.
Once it has been accepted you can use the search function of the Amazon site to find the app and install it.
When the app has installed onto your Fire Stick, ensure you’re connected to the same country using the ExpressVPN app and then open your newly downloaded app.
You’ll now be able to access and watch the content. Some apps will require you to have a valid subscription to the service to make use of them.
